Sept. 1, 1927-Jan. 27, 2008 Gordon O. "Jug" Eckre, 80, of Frazee, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 in the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Fargo. Gordon Ole Eckre was born the son of Ole and Therese (Goodger) Eckre on Sept. 1, 1927 in Abercrombie, N.D., where he was raised and attended country school. At the age of 13, Gordon moved with his family, along with his dog, Peanuts, to Vergas. He entered the United States Army and served during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he married Delores Erickson on Oct. 30, 1948 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loon Lake, near Vergas.
Aug. 11, 1911-Jan. 27, 2008 William J. Aho, 96, of Osage, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the Frazee Care Center, Frazee. William Jacob Aho was born to Andrew and Anna (Sandback) Aho on Aug. 11, 1911 in Toad Lake Township. He grew up and attended school in the Osage area. On June 24, 1935 he married Elvie S. Niemi in Wolf Lake Township. They lived on the home farm in rural Osage until 1942, when they moved to San Diego, Calif., where William worked for Consolidated Aircraft Company.
Oct. 30, 1964-Jan. 25, 2008 Dianna M. Brasel, 43, of Perham, died Friday, January 25, 2008, at her home. Dianna Marie Randash was born the daughter of James Randash and Lois Edwards on Oct. 30, 1964, in Moorhead. She graduated from Frazee High School in 1983, and continued her education at Detroit Lakes Vo-Tech, Detroit Lakes, earning a degree in accounting. Dianna was previously employed with Lakeshirts in Detroit Lakes and most recently at SMT Health Systems in Detroit Lakes. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool, decorating and painting.
Feb. 5, 1916-Jan. 26, 2008 Mabel H. Suter, 91, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 26, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Mabel was born to Carl and Bertha "Betsy" (Simonson) Hyland on Feb. 5, 1916 in McIntosh, Minn., where she grew up and received her education from the McIntosh school system. Mabel was baptized and then confirmed on July 29, 1930 at Our Saviour's Church in McIntosh. She married Clarence Suter on Sept. 20, 1939 in Westbury.
May 28, 1917-Jan. 24, 2008 Irene Jasken, 90, of Ogema, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Irene Florence Brunner was born to George and Anna (Wirtz) Brunner on May 28, 1917 near Callaway, where she attended grade school. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and Moorhead State Teachers' Col-lege. After teaching for five years in rural schools and in Bejou, Minn., she married George Jas-ken in October 1941. They farmed near Ogema, raising a family of five.
March 18, 1918-Jan. 16, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes area resident Iva Broberg, 89, of Fargo, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo. Iva Helen Demmer was born to Fred and Matilda (Smith) Demmer on March 18, 1918, in Dent, Minn. She was the fourth of 10 children, and was raised near Star Lake. Iva attended country school in a schoolhouse just across the road from her home, and later, in 1939, she graduated from North Central Bible College in Minneapolis. Iva married Everill Broberg on Dec. 10, 1943, in Pelican Rapids.
May 25, 1954-Jan. 21, 2008 Larry J. "LJ" Arnold, 53, of Detroit Lakes died at home on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 of cancer. Larry Joe Arnold was born to Viola and Bill Arnold on May 25, 1954 in Dayton, Ohio. After graduating from high school, LJ continued his education in an auto body program. He had the opportunity to play semi-pro baseball, which included a game against Pete Rose. As baseball was not to be his future, he worked the rodeo circuit in Arizona, riding bulls and busting broncos. LJ's love of the cowboy life led him to Colorado to work as a ranch hand.
Aug. 4, 1937-Jan. 19, 2008 Harry Ailport, 70, of Mahnomen, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 in his home. Harry Arbert Ailport was born the son of Hazel and Jim Ailport on Aug. 4, 1937 in Footville, Wis. He grew up in Dansbury, Wis., and attended school there. Furthering his education, Harry obtained training as a machinist at a vocational school. In 1955, he entered the United States Army, where he served his country for two years. Upon an honorable discharge, Harry moved to Chicago, Ill., to begin his career as a machinist.
Oct. 6, 1931-Jan. 21, 2008 Clarence N. Impola, 76, of Lake Park, died January 21, 2008 at his home. Clarence was born to Laurie and Helvi (Korkkeamaki) Impola on Oct. 6, 1931 in Wawina, Minn. He was raised and educated in Duluth, Minn., graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1949. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in September 1949, and received an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant in the control tower in December 1952. Clarence returned to Duluth and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, receiving a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
Sept. 1, 1918-Jan. 18, 2008 Former Waubun resident Sheldon Edward Nygaard, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, January 18, 2008, at Innovis Heath Systems in Fargo. Sheldon Edward Nygaard was born to Ole and Louise (Hanson) Nygaard on Sept. 1, 1918, in Ryder, N.D., where he grew up and began his schooling. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to the Waubun area, where he continued his education. On May 2, 1957, Sheldon married Darlene Shiek in Moorhead. The couple made their home in Moorhead for a short time before moving to the farm east of Waubun.
