Ralph Jepson, 87, of Frazee, died on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Furey Funeral Home, Frazee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pickett Cemetery, rural Frazee. The full obituary will follow. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furey Funeral Home, Frazee.
May 3, 1946-Dec. 13, 2007 Former Detroit Lakes resident Ronald D. Gunderson, 61, of Roseau, Minn., died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Veterans Medical Center in Fargo. Ronald was born to Vernon and Julie (Larson) Gunderson on May 3, 1946 in Detroit Lakes, where he was raised and educated. As a young adult, he started with the Job Corps and worked in forestry. A short time later, in 1967, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and received an honorable discharge in 1970. Ronald returned to Detroit Lakes and worked at Swift Hatchery and Fred Mears Auto.
Feb. 10,1932-Dec. 11, 2007 Paul E. Lofgren, 75, of Waubun, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at St. Mary's Care Center in Detroit Lakes. Paul was born on Feb. 10, 1932, in Hallock, to Axel and Mabel (Erickson) Lofgren. He attended Hallock High School, graduating with the class of 1950. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Minnesota where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry (1954) and his Master of Science Degree (1958).
Nov. 11, 1921-Dec. 12, 2007 Former Leonard, N.D., resident Opal A. Sandvig, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Opal Agnes Johnson was born to Bernard and Alice (McKay) Johnson on Nov. 11, 1921 near McCleod, N.D. She married Elner Sandvig on Dec. 26, 1940 in Moorhead. They farmed near Sheldon, N.D., and later moved to Leonard, where they both worked at the Leonard School. Elner died in 1972. Opal lived in Fargo and West Fargo for a number of years.
Oct. 8, 1912-Dec. 14, 2007 David C. Roy, 95, of White Earth, died Thursday, December 14, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. David Charles Roy was born to Joseph and Mary Roy on Oct. 8, 1912 in White Earth. He married Susan Jackson in White Earth on Feb. 7, 1944. David served with the U. S. Army from March 22, 1944 to Nov. 18, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to White Earth, where he worked in the woods and was a farm hand. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, trapping, harvesting wild rice and dancing.
April 9, 1925-Dec. 8, 2007 Viola Saice, 82, of Mahnomen, died Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo. Viola B. Foster was born to Dan and Viola (Folstrom) Foster on April 9, 1925, in Island Lake, Minn. As a young girl, she attended school in Mahnomen. In 1943, Viola married Saul Saice. The couple continued to live in Mahnomen, where Viola raised their family. Often inseparable, Viola and her sister Edith enjoyed one another's company and spent endless hours together.
Oct. 19, 1933-Dec. 8, 2007 Former Detroit Lakes resident Marlys Staberg McFadden, 74, died Saturday, December 8, 2007 after a prolonged illness. Marlys was born to Arthur and Pauline Staberg on Oct. 19, 1933 in Grand Forks, N.D. She grew up in Detroit Lakes, and then attended the University of Minnesota. While living in Baltimore, Md., she was active in the Republican Party, managing several political campaigns and served as a legislative assistant in the Maryland House of Delegates. In addition, Marlys was a genealogist, compiling extensive research for family and friends.
July 28, 1950-Dec. 9, 2007 Former Ogema resident Gerald L. "Jerr Bear" Kozitka, 57, of Indego, Calif., died Sunday, December 9, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nev. Gerald Lee Kozitka was born to Clarence and Joyce (Liezert) Kozitka on July 28, 1950 in Detroit Lakes. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ogema. Gerald attended Waubun Public Schools, and later worked in building construction in the Ogema-Waubun area. He attended Farrier College in Sturgis, S.D., and became a professional farrier, traveling throughout the entire United States shoeing horses.
June 1, 1936-Dec. 12, 2007 Robert J. "Bob" Flett, 71, of Dent, Minn., died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at his home in Dent, where he had been under the extended care of Lakeland Hospice since August of this year. Robert had been ill for some time with pulmonary fibrosis. Robert James Flett was born to William and Mary (Peterson) Flett on June 1, 1936 in Minneapolis, where he was raised and attended school. He worked as a youth at the Minneapolis ballpark, and did many other small jobs until he started work in the ceramic trade with Dale Tile in Minneapolis.
Dec. 6, 2007-Dec. 6, 2007 George Robert Taylor III, infant son of George Taylor Jr. and Candace Roberts of Ponsford, was stillborn on December 6, 2007 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. He is survived by his parents, George Taylor Jr. and Candace Roberts; grandparents, Sharon Rock, George Taylor and Gerald (Lorraine) Roberts; and great grandparents, Kenneth Arthur and Georgianna Adams.
