How many people would consider going on a seven-day bike ride for 400 miles in the middle of summer? Well, about 17,000 – including former Perham resident Sara Rudolph. The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, held its 42nd annual ride July 20-26 this year. Rudolph, daughter of Kelvin and Sandra Rudolph of Perham, is now a registered nurse living in Orlando, Fla.

As students, parents and coaches prepare for the start of the fall sports season, the school district has been considering adding a new requirement for all athletes in grades seven through 12. “I’m curious how this board would feel about making it a requirement to have the ImPACT baseline concussion test for all of our student athletes,” said Activities Director Erin Anderson at the July Perham-Dent School Board meeting.
Perham’s Rotary Club never left the back room of Lakes Café on July 24, but their speaker brought a perspective from the other side of the world. The ninth annual Dreams for Kids Bike Run might have a new location this year, but its mission is still the same: raise funds to grant wishes to sick children throughout the Perham area. In past years, Dreams for Kids, the local Make-A-Wish Minnesota affiliate, held its bike runs in Perham. This year, the event will shift to New York Mills. Rain or shine, motorcycles will gather at the New York Mills VFW Post 3289 on Saturday, July 26. The night before the ride, on Friday, Willy and the Poorboys will perform on the VFW’s outdoor stage from 8 p.m.
After getting rained out last year, the 19th annual East Otter Tail County Relay for Life went much better this year, according to organizers. “We are sitting at a little over $88,000 as of this morning!” said event chairperson Lisa Peterson on July 14. “Our goal is $93,000, and I’m pretty confident we’ll be able to reach that!” This year, 22 teams committed their entire Friday night to walking around the Perham High School track to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
