Families of children attending Kid’s Adventure Preschool in Perham have the potential to earn scholarships to attend, following the school’s renewal with a state rating program. Principal of Heart of the Lakes Elementary School, Jen Hendrickson, who also oversees the preschool said she learned about Parent Aware ratings for preschools when she started with the district two years ago.
Following a Severe Thunderstorm Watch by the National Weather Service during the afternoon of July 12, all of Otter Tail County was eventually affected in some way by storms later on in the evening. The first funnel cloud reports from in the county reached the weather service at 5:01 p.m., from a trained spotter near Elizabeth, Minn.
Perham Area Chamber of Commerce volunteer, Deb Anstadt, and chamber associate director, Emily Rutten, recently visited Blossoms, Birds and Beyond. This business was opened in 2005 by Nick and Jodi Theroux. It includes about 9,000 square feet – located on Second Ave. NE in Perham – with retail space, two greenhouses and storage spaces for equipment. “Nick has 7.5 acres of land out there, so there is plenty of room for expansion if the need arises,” Rutten said.
Elizabeth Huwe email@example.com It all started in 1994, when then-cross country coaches Ron Anderson and Ruth Wegscheid were on a bus home from a meet in Pine River, Minn. “He said, ‘Ruth, Dee and I just have seen the most amazing thing this summer, and I think that you and Cheryl would be wonderful people to help start this Relay for Life experience,’” Ruth recalled, adding that, “If you hear these words from Ron Anderson, know that you’re going to be in for some work.” The following summer, the first-ever Relay for Life was held in Perham.
Carnivores will converge in Perham on Saturday for the Third Annual Perham Lions Rib Cook Off. While this is the third year for the rib-cooking competition, a chicken-cooking competition is a new addition to the event. Held Saturday, July 11 in the Arvig parking lot, near St. Henry’s Area School, the cook-off will see at least 19 teams face off to find out who is the hottest griller in the area.
Perham Area Chamber of Commerce volunteer Sue Von Ruden and the chamber’s associate director, Emily Rutten recently visited Front 20 Outfitters in Perham. Front 20 is owned by the husband-wife duo of Doug and Roxanne Harthan and was started as a trout fishing guide service in 2007. The fly shop was added in P.S. I Love You Boutique in 2011.

Perham Area Chamber of Commerce volunteer, Amanda Monahan, and the chamber’s associate director, Emily Rutten recently visited Zorbaz on Little Pine Lake. Zorbaz is situated north of Perham on County Highway 51, on the shore of Little Pine Lake. Rutten and Monahan met with Todd Colliton, the operating partner of the restaurant, which is one of 11 locations owned by Lake Life Hospitality Group of Detroit Lakes.
I survived Turtle Fest. Around noon last Wednesday, I wasn’t quite so sure that was going to happen… but I made it! I never expected the phone to ring off of the hook like it was. At one point, I was on the office phone talking with someone, hung up to answer a call on my cell phone from Tyler Krumwiede (parade coordinator), and hung up again to answer the office phone again! It was quite an insane moment.
Scott Bjerke, principal of Perham’s Prairie Wind Middle School, has been recognized by a state association for his work at the school. Bjerke was one of eight named as a 2015 regional Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals. The Perham-Dent district is one of about 25 included in the Western Division. Winners received their awards on June 17, at the association’s summer conference during a special dinner.
