It all started in 2012, when Perham resident Bob Riepe was visiting St. Joseph Cemetery in rural Perham. While there, Riepe realized there were many spots where a grave was visible, but there were no markers. Through “divining” the old part of the cemetery, Riepe found and identified 151 graves, including several that belonged to members of the Steichen family.

Saturday was a busy, cold day for members of the Perham Fire Department, as they responded to two fires in subzero temperatures. At 5:30 a.m., with a temperature of 3 degrees, the department was called to a turkey barn on Black Diamond Road in rural Perham, where a propane tank was thought to be on fire. According to Perham Fire Chief Mark Schmidt, it was an evaporator that malfunctioned and caught fire, not a tank. No injuries were reported.

Perham-Dent School Board members are reaching important decisions about how and when to ask taxpayers to fund some major construction projects. During a special work session last Tuesday, the board made a preliminary agreement to bring a $58.3 million referendum to a vote on May 12. The referendum amount and voting date are not yet final, but are expected to be made official at the board’s next regular meeting, which will be on Monday, Feb.
