Taking a step back in time, all while providing activities and entertainment for the entire family, is the continued goal for this year’s offering of Finn Creek Folk Festival. Located just a few miles outside of the town of New York Mills, this summer festival staple is back in full force this year celebrating its 40th annual summer festival.
Taking to the streets in Ottertail on August 7 and 8 of this year will be the annual Otter Fest town celebration. As per custom, Friday evening will consist of the popular demo-derby held at the city park under the water tower. The Ottertail Rod and Gun Club will again sponsor this fan favorite event set to begin at 7 p.m. Several vendors will be available for one’s favorite food and beverages during the demo-derby so large appetites are always welcome.
The campus of Perham Living and surrounding senior care facilities have seen an influx in youthful rejuvenation recently as children from the Perham Boys and Girls Club as well as the Children’s Learning Corner have been routinely making visits over to enjoy the company of their elders. Beginning about five years ago, the program at the Children’s Learning Corner, located in the Perham Living Complex, has grown from a simple idea to more than 30 small children invested in this opportunity.
Perham celebrated the Fourth of July Holiday in traditional American style, with a baseball game and fireworks. The Perham Pirates and Dent Wildcats met at Krueger Field for their annual Independence Day face-off, with Perham coming out on top, 4-0. The bleachers were full for the game, many fans sitting on the grass outside the concession stand for the fireworks display that followed. After the game spectators moved down onto the field to watch the show. Both events dew large crowds.
You won’t have to wait until ‘high noon’ to kick off this year’s Dent Daze. Held on July 11, the theme for the festivities this year will be “Wild West.” Scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., sharp, will be the Dent Daze 5k Run. “We’ve got a great course this year, starting at the community center and going out of town before coming back into town for the finish line,” said Dent Daze organizer Nicole Seifert.

Back for its second year, Otter Jam 2015 has moved to the Fourth of July weekend, in hopes of providing an entire day’s worth of rock music for the lakes area population that weekend.

With roots dating back to 1915, East Silent Lake Resort shows no signs of slowing down at the spry young age of 100. Nick Leonard, owner for the last 10 years, has a business model described as, “full steam ahead” for recent improvements and additions in the years coming. The resort sits on 50 acres of land on the north side of East Silent Lake, near Dent.
Memorial Day is about more than grilling and having a day off from work or school. Around Perham, Dent and Richville, area residents and visitors turned out to remember those servicemen and women who were lost in our country’s wars. The Memorial Day service in Dent, organized by the Dent American Legion and Auxiliary Post 148, actually took place two days prior to the official holiday, on May 23.
