Three young children were hospitalized after the all-terrain vehicle they were riding on near here collided with a car Monday morning, July 4, in Becker County. The ATV one of the children was driving pulled in front of the car on County Highway 32 about a mile south of the intersection with County Highway 27, which resulted in a collision, according to a release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
Volunteer diver Dave Oehlke, 67, doesn't suit up for calls as often as he did when he first joined North Dakota's Lakes Region Search and Rescue team as an original member in 1981, but he's been on hundreds of calls over the years. Otter Tail County Metal Sculpture Artist, Ken Nyberg, has another piece of work "on the road." The Byron Minnesota Schools near Rochester, Minn., commissioned Nyberg to make two bear cubs. It will match the mother bear at the high school that Nyberg made years ago. The mascot for Byron is a bear. The two bear cubs "on a log" were loaded on a semi in Vining and hauled to Byron last week. The two bears are made of lawn mower blades. Nyberg's sculptures are featured all around the town in Vining, and in towns around Otter Tail County.
ST. PAUL -- Gov. Mark Dayton left the country Tuesday, and House Speaker Kurt Daudt has not called a meeting among the governor and legislative leaders to discuss a special legislative session. "I have not heard anything from the speaker about another meeting..." Dayton said before heading on an official visit to Croatia. "I had asked him to convene the next meeting and host it."
An Ottertail, Minn., man who was arrested at the Dilworth Wal-Mart on Tuesday, June 14, on suspicion of attempting to make off with more than $1,000 worth of merchandise he didn't pay for told the arresting officer he had just got out of prison and was on parole. According to court documents, Dilworth police were called to the Wal-Mart on Tuesday on a report that loss prevention staff had a shoplifting suspect detained.

Troubling details have emerged regarding the mental health of Dustin Defiel, the suspect in the shooting death of his father, Rick Defiel. Four years ago, a local suicide prevention organization foreshadowed a shooting while pleading Defiel's heartbreaking story to leaders in Washington, D.C., asking for them to step up in helping treat veterans with PTSD. Defiel was charged with second-degree murder in Otter Tail County Court last Friday. Bail was set at $1 million.

FARGO - Emergency sirens sounded off just before 3 p.m. on May 27 in Fargo-Moorhead after funnel clouds were spotted east of Moorhead causing a scare to residents mostly at work. Pete Speicher, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Forks, estimated that three to four funnel clouds were spotted. “There’s enough low-level rotation that once some weak storms began to develop they created some very weak, mostly high-based funnels,” he said.
