An early blast of winter in the Upper Midwest unloaded several inches of snow across a wide swath of Minnesota and Wisconsin on Monday, causing difficult driving conditions and leading to school cancellations across the region.
CARLTON, Minn. -- A 69-year-old man died after accidentally shooting himself with his rifle at a deer stand in southwest Carlton County on Sunday morning, authorities reported. Robert Duane Peterson of Nowthen, Minn., was pronounced dead at the scene not far from the west branch of the Kettle River, in Automba Township northwest of Moose Lake, according to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.
A Laporte man died after being shot on the opening day of Minnesota's firearms deer season. The Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office said Paul Scholl, 50, was shot while coming out of his deer hunting area about 16 miles southeast of Mahnomen in northwestern Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
A Park Rapids man was killed in a rollover early Friday in Hubbard County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the incident was reported just after 1:30 a.m. John Wolfe, 29, was eastbound on State Highway 87 at milepost 46 in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban when he drove onto County Road 20 northbound, where the road curves, and immediately ran off the road, the patrol said.
ST. PAUL - A St. Paul police officer’s squad car collided with a Green Line light-rail train Monday afternoon, causing buses to replace train service for about an hour. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at Pascal Street and University Avenue. The train struck the car’s gas tank, causing gas to spill onto the street.

ALEXANDRIA, S.D. - Two Minnesota women attempted to rob an Alexandria gas station Sunday afternoon, according to the Hanson County Sheriff's Office. Alissa Wakefield, 18, of Cloquet, Minn., was the woman who entered the Westown Shell about 1:30 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk, pointing a gun to the clerk's head.
MAYNARD, Minn. - A person was killed Monday afternoon after being run over by a combine near Maynard in western Minnesota. The Renville County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the preliminary investigation shows that the victim was approaching the rear of the combine unbeknownst to the driver and was run over by the rear wheels. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
CROOKSTON, Minn. – A man was killed when he crashed his pickup truck here after a high-speed chase with police Sunday night. A witness told WDAY-TV that the adult male driver was speeding when he drove into a concrete underpass on Sixth Street.
