BENSON, Minn. — A western Minnesota man is in a Minneapolis hospital after he was injured earlier this week in an explosion at a rural residence east of Benson. The injured man was identified as Brian Orsten, 51, of Benson. He was initially taken to the Swift County Benson Hospital and later airlifted to the Minneapolis hospital, according to Swift County Sheriff John Holtz.
CHICAGO — Depression is a growing condition throughout the United States, but according to a massive new study, Minnesotans and North Dakotans struggle more than most. The study from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association shows the two states have a depression problem. The condition can be crippling, even life-threatening.
DULUTH -- A 33-year-old Duluth middle school teacher has been arrested for alleged child sexual abuse. The woman was booked into the St. Louis County Jail on Monday afternoon, May 21, on a preliminary charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a victim between the ages 13-15, according to jail records. Karla Winterfeld, a teacher at Lincoln Park Middle School teacher was arrested around 3:15 p.m. Monday as part of an ongoing investigation. Winterfeld was listed on the St. Louis County jail roster Tuesday afternoon.
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND — A North Dakota native and her husband have died in a fishing accident while on vacation in Iceland. Janet Veit grew up in Richland County and was a graduate of Wyndmere (N.D.) High School. She and her husband, Brian Schumacher, were living in La Crescent, Minn., where she worked nearby in LaCrosse, Wis., as a veterinarian.
LAPORTE, Minn. — A 42-year-old Iowa man and his 4-year-old child died after their kayak overturned on Hart Lake on Saturday, May 19. The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the lake at about 1:26 p.m. Saturday after a family member of the victims reported that the kayak had overturned and not come up to the surface of the water.
FORADO, Minn. — A man who was assaulted outside of a bar and grill has died from his injuries. Steven "Beaver" Hlinsky, 46, a long-time Forada firefighter, died Sunday afternoon, May 13, at his home, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which received a 911 call from the Hlinsky residence. Hlinsky, who was unresponsive when first responders arrived, was pronounced and an autopsy has been ordered, according to the Sheriff's Office.
FRAZEE, Minn. – Thousands of turkeys are dead after an early-morning fire broke out at a barn near here Thursday, May 3. The fire started about 7 a.m., according to Frazee Fire Chief Albert Doll. Five nearby fire departments were called in to help extinguish the massive blaze.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Two people have been arrested and charged with Third Degree Murder in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy here, and his sibling has been taken into protective custody. Bobbie Christine Bishop, 40, and Walter Henry Wynhoff, 44, both of Fergus Falls, were being held Tuesday, April 10, in Otter Tail County Jail and both are charged with Third Degree Murder.
HOLLOWAY, Minn. – The Swift County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a crash with multiple injuries on Monday, March 12, about 4 p.m. between a Hancock Public School transport van and a semi at a rural intersection north of Holloway in far west-central Minnesota. Swift County Sheriff John Holtz said late Monday night that seven schoolchildren, ages 8 to 16, were injured along with the woman who was driving the van. He said all eight have been taken to hospitals.
