BENSON, Minn. — A kindergarten student brought a gun to a Benson elementary school Tuesday morning. In a news release, Swift County Sheriff John Holtz said the sheriff’s office, Benson Police and Northside Elementary officials were notified of the situation just after 8 a.m. Other students immediately told a teacher about the gun.
WAHPETON, N.D. – Scupper the golden retriever stood alert on the bow of a flat-bottom boat Tuesday afternoon on the Wild Rice River. He was trying to pick up a scent, but a stiff breeze complicated his efforts. “Today is a poor day for working the dog because of the amount of wind,” said Pete Fendt, a Valley Water Rescue team member who took a turn in the bow, probing the brown waters with a long pole, to no avail. COOPERSTOWN, N.D. – A 3-year-old boy missing for nearly six hours Monday night was discovered safe after an hours-long air, foot, bloodhound, horseback and ATV search, thanks in part to the family dog. Griggs County Sheriff Robert Hook said the boy’s parents, Courtney and Brock Urness, called 911 about 8:30 p.m.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. - Former Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon, who was accused of swindling the public by selling the sheriff’s office a used boat and passing it off as new, was sentenced Tuesday in the case. Under a plea agreement struck last week and approved Tuesday in Becker County District Court, two felony charges of theft by swindle and making false claims were dropped. Gordon pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of misconduct of a public officer. Gordon was sentenced to a year in jail with all but 10 days of that stayed for two years.

North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm’s Dec. 26, 2013, cease and desist order against Frederick Paul Skoda, formerly of Fargo, now of Detroit Lakes, has been made permanent by an Administrative Law Judge. The order bars Skoda from engaging in the business of insurance directly or indirectly. The order was served on Skoda for committing insurance fraud by filing multiple applications for insurance policies for individuals that never wanted the insurance.
Two people from Cass Lake were killed in a head-on collision Saturday night in Cass County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol incident report, a 2004 Kia Spectra was southbound on County Road 75 and Leech Lake Route 438 before 11 p.m.
BECKER COUNTY, Minn. – A 5-year-old boy died Thursday evening in a farm accident south of Wolf Lake, Minn., according to the Becker County Sheriff’s Department. It appeared the boy tried to get into a skid-steer loader by crawling between the bucket and the frame of the machine, the department said. The loader was not running but was under hydraulic pressure.
