HAWLEY, Minn.
ST. PAUL — About 38,000 state workers are due to get raises after the House and Senate approved contracts. Members of several state worker unions last year approved the contract. It gives them a 3 percent raise each year in the current two-year budget, but also requires employees to pay more toward insurance. Rep. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, said private employees are not seeing the same size raises.
PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. – The death of a 4-year-old Pelican Rapids girl, who fell ill after becoming infected with a dangerous strain of E. coli bacteria, was an isolated case, a health official said Monday. Sophia Amy Odens started having flu-like symptoms Feb. 5, and she was hospitalized the next day in Detroit Lakes, according to her obituary, which ran Sunday in The Forum. Odens was soon transferred to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, and tests revealed she was infected with the O157:H7 strain of E. coli.
Spring has officially arrived, but we still have plenty of ice on the area lakes. It looks like we will continue to have ice available for ice anglers for at least the next two or three weeks (or four or five!). The season is closed for walleye, northern, and bass in our area, but avid ice anglers that enjoy chasing pan fish will enjoy the next several weeks. Pan fish action in the shallow water will continue to improve with the improving weather.

FARGO – Nancy Stromback was suddenly overcome by weakness two weeks ago while preparing to run an errand and was unable to move from the driver’s seat of her van. Two fatal crashes in Minnesota on Monday, one west of Eden Valley and one south of Winthrop, are the latest incidents making March a deadly month on the state’s highways. According to the State Patrol’s preliminary numbers, there have been 19 deaths on Minnesota highways since March 1. That compares to nine deaths in 2013.
