AARP providing free tax preparation in New York Mills, Perham and Wadena beginning in February. Started in 1968 by four volunteers, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is now the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation program. AARP volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code. With their help, taxpayers received $1.3 billion refunds. By using AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, these low-to moderate-income taxpayers also avoid preparation fees and pitches for high -interest tax credit or refund loans.
Perham Seniors Erika Kruzel and Andrew Newville were crowned Snoball Queen and King Sunday evening. The full royalty court included: Freshman: Grayce Mickelson and Brett Lueders; Sophomores: Nadia Palubicki, Jacob Briard, Mariah Samuelson and Judd Soule; Juniors: Alysa Ralston, Jenson Beachy, Annika Kovar, John LaFond, Haley Budak and Jonathan Enamorado; Seniors: Sydney Bahls, Zackery Zajac, Kolbey Bormann, Benjamin Winkels, Makayla Melvin, Madison McAllister, Dawson Honer, and Logan Wallace.
Lindsey Soule, Megan Tellinghuisen, Sydney Riepe, Erika Kruzel raised close to $1,000 for the art program at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School as part of the Senior English project.
Hamann Dentistry will be providing free dental care to low income children, ages three to 18, on Friday, February 2, from 8 a.m. to noon. Parents and guardians are encouraged to make appointments. Children must be accompanied by an adult family member. Services vary from cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments to restorative care. The dental clinic is located at 200 1st Ave. S. Six Perham High School seniors participated in the 68th Annual Dorian Choral Festival at Luther College in Decorah, IA last week. Ian Christenson, Seth Dykhoff, Keith (Junior) Nordick, Andrew Newville, Shelby Burns, and Audrey Swanson sang with the Festival Choir, which was comprised of over 1,100 high school students from MN, IA, WI, ND, & SD. Christenson, Nordick, and Swanson were also part of the smaller Chamber Choir, which was comprised of about 80 students chosen from the larger choir. Maggie Wothe was selected Miss Perham 2018 and Hanna Beck was chosen as Miss Perham's Outstanding Teen 2018 at the Miss Perham and Miss Heart of the Lakes Pageant on January 13 at the Perham High School Auditorium.
The Minnesota FFA Foundation is pleased to announce the presentation of the official FFA jacket to members of the Perham FFA Chapter. Cooper Brasel, Timothy Fritz, and Shelby Schlosser have been selected to receive their own jacket.
Justin Spencer won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee held Monday, January 8, at Prairie Wind Middle School. The school Bee was the first round in the 30th annual National Geographic Bee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Other participants included: Zach Ebeling, Jackson Brown, second place finisher Easton Stewart, Rian Solberg, Jonah Bieger, Molly Pearson, Lexus Garza, Carter Seedorf, Justin Spencer, Lily Aakre and Audrey Tumberg.
A propane heater is believed to have started a fire at a Jennie-O turkey barn early this morning. At approximately 12:18 a.m., Otter Tail County Sheriff received a call regarding a fire at 41963 County Highway 53. When deputies and fire personnel arrived, they found the barn engulfed in flames. Fire personnel from Perham, Dent, New York Mills, and Vergas were able to control the blaze. Employees from Jennie-O confirmed no workers or animals were in the barn at the time of the fire. The structure is a complete loss.
