Local first place winner, of the VFW Auxiliary Voice of Democracy contest, Madelyn Tangen, has won the district contest and now moves onto the state competition. She is the first local winner to achieve this goal, according to Diane Rux, VFW Auxiliary Ninth District President. Tangen's essay went up against 26 other competitors and is now one of nine to be judged at the state level. She was joined by her parents, ReNae and Bob Tangen, when she received her certificate from the local VFW Auxiliary. The awards ceremony is in Minneapolis in January.
There was a wide array of notable stories in and around Perham in 2017. What's most notable, though, about the Perham community when looking back over 2017 is its ability to come together.

For some, it's been a long time since they've gotten to celebrate with their families the way most do because their jobs require them to care about us.
Hours for the Sisters Grain Bin were incorrectly listed in the story that ran on Page A2 of the Dec. 7 issue of the Focus. The correct hours as listed on the Sisters Grain Bin Facebook page are Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
An anonymous donation of nearly seven thousand dollars was given to the Perham-Dent Public School district to pay off overdue lunch tabs for students on the free and reduced lunch program. "This is the first time we've received this type of donation," Superintendent Mitch Anderson said. "In talking to the donor, it was triggered by the attention overdue lunch accounts has received not only in Minnesota, but throughout the country." He added that letters have been written to inform families and will be sent out this week.
The VFW Auxiliary Fall Americanism Contest had 125 students participate this year. Kindergarten and first graders who chose to participate colored a picture of the American Eagle and second and first graders who chose to participate colored a picture of Betsy Ross. Fourth and fifth graders wrote an essay on the story of the Statue of Liberty. Americanism is a state contest to promote patriotism in elementary age children. First, second, and third place winners/prizes were awarded at each grade level and sent on for further competition at the district level.
Students in Preschool- 6th grade at St. Paul's Lutheran School shared the Christmas message at their program on Wednesday December 6.
Perham, MN — Steven Murrell, M.D., recently joined the Perham Health team. His addition will enhance expertise and further improve access. Murrell received his medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, West Indies. He specializes in family medicine at the Perham Health Clinic. He is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.
The Minnesota Association of Townships (MAT) is proud to announce its 18th annual scholarship program for high school Juniors in the state of Minnesota. Up to six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. All applications for the awards must be submitted by May 1st, 2018.
Perham Lions would like to invite new members who want to continue promoting worthwhile community events. Some of the past events promoted by the Perham Lions include Turtle Fest, Rib Cook Off, Parade of Lights, Fair Bingo, Chicken Feed, Demo Derby, Project New Hope Cyle Ride, as well as our food wagon at Turtle Races, and many other community events. We also try to fulfill donation requests from the community and support the eleven areas designated by Lions International.
