Laporte Area Take a Kid Fishing Fundraiser this Saturday at Pine Beach Resort and Campground in Laporte. It will start at 4 pm and go until 7. We will be serving fish and all the fixings to raise money for our 2012 event on June 9th. At Pine Beach Resort & Campground. Kids can sign up for a chance to win a fishing rod/reel combo donated by Rick Voight Memorial Fund. Adults can sign up for a chance to win a pontoon/boat rental donated by Pine Beach Resort & Campground. The event is scheduled for June 9, 2012 on Lake Garfield.
Republicans say they are paying what they owe Minnesota counties for information from last fall's governor election recount. "We have about 20 counties left to go," GOP Chairman Tony Sutton said. "We have been chipping away on them." Sutton estimated that the party could finish paying its recount bills within four weeks. He said about $20,000 remains to be paid. "It is about managing all the bills we have," Sutton said. Hubbard County is not one of the delinquent accounts.
Blizzard Estra stranded 800 motorists in North Dakota Friday. Her tail winds caused numerous accidents in the Park Rapids area Saturday morning. In Hubbard County deputies responded to four accidents, including two rollovers, on Highway 71 south of Park Rapids, in a one-hour period. Most were traveling too fast for the icy conditions, authorities said. One 20-year-old woman was transported to St. Joseph's Area Health Services with a possible neck injury.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory and hazardous weather outlook for parts of the region and a blizzard watch and winter storm warning will begin later today. A winter storm carrying snow from the Rockies through western North Dakota is expected to push into eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota today.

Jean Mary Swaggert, 83, died July 7, 2009 at Lake Belle Taine. She was born Aug. 31, 1925 to Jack and Mary McKenna in south Minneapolis. She was a 1943 graduate of Minneapolis Central High. She had early aspirations in music and clothing design; however, found business to be her later life's interest. In 1960 she and her husband started Camper's Paradise. She is survived by five children: Kathleen (Marsh) Nichols, Loni (Scott) Cochrane, Pat (Lynn), Jon (Anita) and James (Vicki); 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.R.
Mildred "Millie" Jeanette Pottratz, 88, of Park Rapids, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Coon Rapids. She was born Oct. 3, 1920 to Alfred and Inga (Kittelson) Oines near Arlington, S.D. She attended country school near her parent's farm. As a young woman, she ventured to Brookings, S.D. where she worked as a sales clerk in a department store. She met George Theodore Pottratz while he was serving in the U.S. Navy and they were married Jan. 11, 1946 in Minneapolis.
Mildred J. Pottratz, 88, a long time Park Rapids area resident, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Funeral service: 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids. Visitation: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids. Philip C. Megorden, 80, of Prior Lake, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer's at Heart to Home Residence, Mendota Heights. He was born in Princeton Dec. 19, 1928 to Rev. Tennis and Ruth (Olson) Megorden. He married Gladys E. Brenna Aug. 29, 1953 in Gully. Colonel Megorden served in the U.S. Army in World War II and later enlisted in the North Dakota and Minnesota National Guard and retired after 33 years.
John George Glatzmaier Jr., 80, of Minneapolis, formerly of Park Rapids, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He was born to John Sr. and Amelia (Dubuque) Glatzmaier Jan. 8, 1929 in Washington. After his mother died in 1938 he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Tony and Mona Glatzmaier on the family farm north of Two Inlets. He attended Park Rapids High School, graduating with the class of 1948. He lived on the farm until joining the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy for four years, he enlisted in the U.S.
