Bernice Louise Giese, 96 of Park Rapids, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids. She was born Sept. 19, 1912 in Walker to Hans Albert and Birdie Minerva (Ware) Arvig. At age 10 she began to help her dad at the telephone switchboard after school. She attended Nevis High School through grade 11. She married Carl Frederick Giese in December 1928. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and lived there until 1930 when they moved to the Lake George area. She delivered mail on a rural mail route. They moved to San Diego, Calif.
Bernerd Jerome Rock, Sr. "miizhikwaad," which means Ray of Sunshine, "gitebwaan," which means Old Time Sioux. The oldest of Wolf Clan "maaingan doodem," 76, of Cass Lake, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at his home. He was born May 28, 1933 on Star Island, Leech Lake to Wolf Rock and Nancy (Cummings) Rock LaRose. He was very active in veterans affairs and belonged to the VFW Posts from Bagley, Amvets, Bemidji and Red Lake.
Ruth Aliina Olson, 84, of Park Rapids, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services. She was born in Wadena County April 24, 1925 to Olaf and Alina (Wiitasalo) Liimatta. She attended #28 Country School in Wadena County through the eighth grade and graduated from Menahga High School in 1942. Following graduation, she worked at the defense plant in Minneapolis for two years and returned to Menahga. She married Ansel Olson on Oct. 25, 1947. Ruth was a homemaker and worked on the family farm while the children were growing. Later, she worked at Howie's Clothing in Menahga.
Eva Marie Lof, 103, of the Park Rapids and Nevis areas, died Monday, July 6, 2009. She was born April 24, 1906 in Galena, Ill. to Elmer and Josephine (Warmath ) Sisco. As a girl, she ventured with her family to the Park Rapids area where she attended country school at Emmaville. On Dec. 30, 1922 she married Edwin Alex Lof. They had five children. She and her husband owned and operated Lof Lumber Co. in Nevis for many years. She was involved with the Hobby Shop in Nevis and Park Rapids.
Bernice Louise Giese, 96, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Park Rapids. Funeral service: 2 p.m. Monday, July 6 at Lake George Bible Chapel in Lake George, with Pastor John Wheir officiating. Visitation: One hour prior to the services at the church. Interment: Lake George Cemetery.
Jerry Edward Erdman, Sr., 68, of Park Rapids, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home near Park Rapids. He was born March 21, 1941 in Verona Township, Faribault County, to Glen R. and June (Jeffries) Erdman. As a youngster he grew up and attended school in southern Minnesota. He attended high school in Hackensack and Backus. He graduated from Backus high school in 1960. He married Berneice Cunningham June 23, 1962 at Akeley Methodist Church in Akeley. They lived in Minneapolis for 13 years. While living there he worked for the Pan O Gold Baking Co. as an engineer from 1963 until 1974.
Pauline Georgia Jorgensen, 94, of Flanagan, Ill., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at Good Samaritan Home, Flanagan. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and resided there for over 65 years. She married Robert Allard Jorgensen July 7, 1935. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1988.
Elizabeth Lillian Ullery, 94, of Park Rapids, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at her home. She was born Oct. 12, 1914 to George and Mary Jane (Piatt) DeCamp in Drake County, Ohio. Her father died when she was 6 years old. She grew up and attended school in Greenville, Ohio and graduated from Miami County in Casstown, Ohio. She married Raymond Ullery on March 30, 1935 in Richmond, Ind. They lived in Dayton, Ohio where Raymond ran two different barber shops. In 1970 they bought Sunset Resort in Osage. They sold the resort in 1974. In 1981 they retired and moved to Osage.
Una VaLoris Rage, 74, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Bethany Homes in Fargo, N.D. after a long battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 15, 1934 in Fargo, N.D. to Ted and Helen Anderson. She graduated from Akeley in 1952. She retired from American Family Insurance in 1996 where she had been employed for over 20 years.
Jerry Edward Erdman Sr., 68, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home near Park Rapids. Funeral services: 2 p.m. Monday, June 29 at Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 28 at Cease Family Funeral Home of Park Rapids. Interment: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery south of Dorset. An obituary will appear in a future issue of the Enterprise.
