Donovan "Donnie" Martin, 87, of Nevis, died on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. He was born on Aug. 15, 1921 to James William and Emma Marie (Hensel) Martin in Mantrap Township, north of Nevis. He grew up in Mantrap Township and attended country school there. In the early 1930s he moved with his family to Iowa where they lived for a short time. After returning to Minnesota he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. and worked on projects in northern Minnesota camps. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in August 1941.
Bruce John Wallen, 63, died Dec. 4, 2008 in Sacramento, Calif. He was born on April 21, 1945 in Minneapolis to John Robert and Virginia Wallen. In 1958 his step-father Warren Fisher and mother Virginia Fisher bought the Gambles store in Nevis. He attended school in Nevis and graduated in 1963. He married Betty Smith in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1964. They had two children. In 1979, after moving to Sacramento, he married Delorse (Lolo) Hyatt and had two children.

Leslie Lynn Goplen Koester, 50, of Lorton, Va. and formerly of Long Prairie, died Dec. 3, 2008 in Long Prairie. She was born Aug. 30, 1958 to Gerald (Jerry) S. and Eleanor (Ellie) M. (Stigen) Goplen. She was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. She graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1977. In 1993 she married Keith D. Koester in Itasca State Park. They spent the last 15 years living in California, Colorado and most recently Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Keith, of Lorton, Va.; mother Eleanor M.
Edward "Eddie" Karkula, 83, of Park Rapids, formerly of Minneapolis, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at his home. He was born March 22, 1925 in northeast Minneapolis. He graduated from Edison High School in January of 1943. Following his graduation, he worked in the warehouse for Ed Phillips and Sons Wholesale Liquor Co. in Minneapolis. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He was honorably discharged in April 1946. He married Lillian Engen in 1950. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he went back to work for Ed Phillips and Sons.
Dolores Irene (Bajenske) Ylitalo, 76, of Menahga, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 in St. Paul. She was born Nov. 9, 1932 in rural Otter Tail County to Anton and Frances Bajenske. She lived on a dairy farm west of Menahga. She graduated from Menahga High School in 1951 and moved to Minneapolis, where she was employed by Western Union as a clerk and operator. She married Wesley Ylitalo on June 23, 1956 in Wolf Lake. They lived in Blaine until moving to Menahga in 1965. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Menahga.
Sister Margaret Ann Eischens, 92, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at Villa Saint Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston. She was born May 20, 1916 to Christian and Mary Elizabeth (Dirkes) Eischens in Two Inlets. She attended a rural elementary school before attending Mount Saint Benedict Academy in Crookston for high school. She entered the novitiate in 1935 at Mount Saint Benedict and received the name Sister James. She later returned to her baptismal name, adding Ann in place of Barbara. She attended the College of Saint Catherine in Saint Paul and received a bachelor's degree in education.
Ross M. Loomis, 54, of Nevis, formerly of northeast Minneapolis, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008. He worked in the Minneapolis Public Library as a book binder for 20 years. He worked for Lamb-Weston/RDO in Park Rapids for 12 years. He lived in Nevis for 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Gerri; son, Ryan; mother, Joanne; two brothers: Dave (Deb) and Gary (Betty); a sister, Ian (Greg) and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard. Memorial service: 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. Memorial prayer service is at 7 p.m.

Leroy S. Crackel, 73, of Bemidji, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 at Neilson Place in Bemidji. He was born March 4, 1935 in Miller, S.D. to Elroy and Anna (Blaseg) Crackel. He moved with his family to a farm near Nimrod in 1936. He graduated from Pine River High School and upon graduation joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He was at Fort Lewis, Wash. on alert during the Berlin call-up.
