Paul John Bentler, 81, of Park Rapids, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at Merit-Care Hospital in Fargo, N.D. He was born Oct. 16, 1927 in Randall to Bernard and Bertha (Boudreau) Bentler. He attended grade school in Randall and graduated from Little Falls High School. He graduated from Dunwoody Institute of Minneapolis. He was drafted in the Army Air Force in 1946 and served in the Philippines until 1947. He married Mary Ann Unger in Sauk Centre on July 3, 1950. They had eight sons. He served at Camp Rucker in Alabama and in 1951 he was sent overseas to Korea.
Anne Elizabeth Notch, 34, of Andover, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at home. She was born Aug. 13, 1974 in Omaha, Neb. to Lawrence Louis and Jean Adele (Dayton) Lewandowski. She married Jon Phillip Notch and they had three children.
Fredrick Louis Jackson, 87, of White Earth, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at Mahnomen Health Care Center. He was born Nov. 23, 1921 to Lillian Jackson in White Earth where he was raised and educated. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-49. Following his discharge from the service he moved to Minneapolis.
Richard "Dick" John Walsh, 69, of Park Rapids, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at his home near Park Rapids. He was born April 26, 1939 at home in Savannah Township to Charles Emery and Julia Ethel (Olson) Walsh. He grew up there and attended country school at Arago Township through the seventh grade. He went to high school in Park Rapids and graduated in 1957. He married Sandra Mae Waterman on March 21, 1959 in Park Rapids. He served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1957-62 and belonged to the Park Rapids unit. In 1962 he founded Dick Walsh Forest Products.
Paul L. Carey, 91, of Park Rapids, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. He was born July 17, 1917 in Crookston to Paul Sr. and Pearl (Ruth) Carey. He moved to Park Rapids when he was 5 years old. He graduated in 1938. He was involved for 47 years in Golden Gloves boxing and won regionals in 1940. He married Ma Donna Mae Hensel in Placerville, Calif. She died Dec. 1, 1958. On Aug.
Lucille "Lu" Wilhemina Marie Albee, 86, of Park Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. She was born and raised in Latimer, Iowa.
Robert T. Cekalla, 78, of St. Paul, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at United Hospital in St. Paul. He was born March 12, 1930 in Lake Itasca to Alex and Marie (Meier) Cekalla. He grew up and attended school in Lake Itasca. As an adult, he made his home in Lake Alice, where he worked on the family farm until joining the U.S. Army. Robert Walter Carlson, 85, of Akeley, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids. He was born June 20, 1923 in Minneapolis to Walter H. and Karin M. (Danelius) Carlson. He attended Minneapolis schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific in the Signal Corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946. He married Phyllis May Hansen on May 25, 1946 in Minneapolis. They lived in Maple Plain for 14 years where he worked as a postal carrier.
Virgil Leslie Kinnunen, 75, of Menahga, formerly of Mounds View, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 in Little Falls. He was born to Hugo and Ruby (Flowers) Kinnunen on Jan. 23, 1933 in Wadena County. He served for four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Clara Daigle, of Cloquet, on April 27, 1957. They had four children. He worked at Trailmobile as a trailer mechanic and he was a member of the union. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Menahga. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was active in Guy L.
Marvin R. Grangruth, 81, of Menahga and Wolf Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids. Memorial service: Noon, Saturday, Jan. 17 at Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga with Rev. Elmer Yliniemi officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Wolf Lake VFW Post. Visitation: One hour prior to the service Saturday, Jan. 17 at Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home.
