MORRIS, Minn. -- A barn fire in western Minnesota on Saturday morning killed about 1,800 hogs and caused nearly $700,000 in property damage, the Morris Fire Department reported. The barn and hogs are the property of Lowell Moser and Loren Schmidgall of Spring Valley Farms south of Morris in Stevens County. About 8:15 a.m. Saturday, the Morris Fire Department received a call about a barn fire off U.S. Highway 59.
A shed, skidsteer, about 30 bales of hay and several other farm items were lost in a fire in New York Mills on Friday. Charles Jacobson, of 36691 County Highway 67, reported that his shed was on fire, with flames exiting the roof, at about 6:45 p.m., according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office. Upon the arrival of the New York Mills Fire Department, the shed was fully engulfed. A local neighbor assisted the fire department by removing some hay bales with his skidsteer to clear a path to extinguish the rest of the fire. The Deer Creek Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
Two Fergus Falls men have been arrested in connection with a string of area burglaries over the past several months. Adam Sundby and Adam Devorak, both age 25, were arrested Friday after early morning burglaries that day at homes along Highway 78 near Otter Tail Lake. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office responded to multiple burglary alarms and discovered that five residences had been entered by force, according to a press release.
Authorities responded late Friday morning to a two-vehicle accident involving a rolled-over minivan at the intersection of First Street Northeast and Birch Avenue Northeast north of Highway 10. Sergeant Naomi Plautz of the Wadena Police Department said the cause of the accident was still under investigation and the driver of the minivan was taken to Tri-County Health Care as a precaution. Damages to the minivan were severe.
Those who have been kept up late at night or had their conversation with friends drowned out by the horns of trains passing through Wadena will most likely will have to continue dealing with the noise. There is a solution that exists for noisy trains, called a "quiet zone," which is an area the Federal Railroad Administration sets up so that train operators don't have to automatically sound their horns as they go through town.
With a new director in place and construction on the housing pods starting to take shape, The Refuge Christian Outreach Center's project to build a 28-bed shelter for homeless men in the Detroit Lakes area is nearing completion. "We're not letting any moss grow under our feet," said Lynnette Price, who started her new job as director of the Compassion House on Friday.

Ellie Rutten, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, poured in 25 points to lift New York Mills to a 54-46 win over Lake Park-Audubon in a Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 quarterfinal game at Concordia's Memorial Auditorium. The 20th annual Fish Fries fundraisers for St. Henry's Area School will be held Friday, March 8 and Friday, March 22. These Catholic United Financial Matching Grant Fundraisers are sponsored by the Holy Family Catholic United Council of Perham. The public is welcome to get their fill of deep fried fish, baked potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, dinner rolls, bars, coffee and juice. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Take out is available. The site is handicap accessible. The fish fries will be held from 5-7 p.m. both nights, in the basement of St. Henry's Church.
