“Write here, write there, write everywhere you go.” That’s just one of the things third and fourth graders from Heart of the Lakes Elementary learned at the recent Young Writers (and Other Artists) Conference in Fergus Falls, according to third grader Soren Anderson. Kids participated in break-out sessions at the conference, listening to stories and learning tips from authors, illustrators and photographers. Session leaders

Turtles, start your engines. Perham’s 2014 International Turtle Races start next week, kicking off another summer of fun, kid-friendly competitions. The races are held every Wednesday in Perham in June, July and August. They’re held downtown, at Turtle Park, starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins a half-hour earlier, at 10 a.m. Always a favorite activity for kids and families, the Turtle Races attract visitors from all over the globe, including right here in Perham.
The Otter Tail County Safe Communities Coalition has recognized its Outstanding Traffic Safety Partners of 2013, and a Perham police officer is among them. Officer Ron Smith, who has worked with the Perham Police Department for five years, was named an ‘Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer.’ He received recognition and a plaque at an awards luncheon in Fergus Falls on May 14. Smith has been very active in traffic safety through his work with DWI enforcement, the enforcement of other traffic violations and his participation in a Toward Zero Deaths grant, according to information provided b

Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember all the military men and women who have died in service to the country. It’s a solemn day of remembrance and honor; a day for every citizen across the nation to be thankful for the freedoms they enjoy, and to be grateful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for those freedoms. The Perham Go-Getters had their “best year ever” at the local 2014 Walk MS, raising record-high donations of over $9,700. The walk was held at the M State campus in Fergus Falls on May 4. According to a press release, the Go-Getters raised enough to be one of the top performing teams at this year’s walk – if not the top, once all remaining donations are collected. The team was one of the largest, with 32 participants out of a total 200 at the walk.
