A 27-year-old Dent man has been arrested for his involvement in two burglaries, including one at Nootzie’s Café on Christmas morning. Justin Michael Lemon was arrested by Otter Tail County sheriff’s deputies on Dec. 26, in connection with burglaries at Dent Equity and Nootzies Café, the sheriff’s office reported. Cash and tools were stolen Dec.
A man who used a chop saw to cut up stolen steel I-beams and then sold them to an area business has been sentenced to 180 days in jail. Christopher Lee Haugen, age 27, of Rothsay, was sentenced in Otter Tail County District Court on Dec. 23. This came about following a conviction of property damage in the first degree, a felony. Haugen also had been charged with theft of steel. Court records state that on Feb. 7, 2012, Haugen used a gas-powered chop saw to cut steel I-beams that had been stolen.
Otter Tail County sheriff’s deputies were informed on Dec. 26 of the theft of a portable fish house from in front of a thrift store on East Main Street in Perham. The theft took place between Dec. 24 and Dec. 26.
A 47-year-old Dent man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after flipping a snowmobile over on Highway 108, said the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. The man, whose name was not available, made a previous call to law enforcement to report a stolen wallet. Authorities at the scene of the crash found the wallet in the man’s pocket. The accident also involved a 42-year-old female. Further details of the incident were not available at press time. Tom Hintgen Otter Tail County Correspondent
Four fish houses were the target of recent burglaries on Rusch Lake, north of Dent. Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputies said padlocks on the doors of each fish house had been cut, allowing the thief or thieves to gain entry inside. The break-ins likely took place Dec. 27 and 28. A total of $1,300 worth of fishing gear and other items was stolen.

The drunk driver involved in a boating accident that seriously injured a tuber on West McDonald Lake on July 4, 2012 has been sentenced. Lucas Michael Buerkley, 21, of Fargo, N.D., appeared in Otter Tail County District Court on Dec. 23. He was sentenced to one year in jail, with 355 days stayed for two years. He will also pay a $300 fine and be on probation for two years.
Perham residents are among a group of area professionals and lawmakers working together to enhance economic development throughout the county. The Otter Tail County Economic Development committee was recently established by the county board as a way for communities to share ideas, collaborate on projects and network. Discussions at the committee meetings are expected to help further such efforts as affordable housing and the promotion of tourism.
