A special Maplewood State Park Birthday Reunion will be held from 2-4 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter. There will be cake and people will share stories of living in Maplewood Township before it became a state park. There also will be stories of the early days of the park, which was established in 1963. For two weekends, Sept. 28-29 and Oct.
The Augsburg Centennial Singers will appear in concert at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature familiar hymns, barbershop tunes and sacred music selections. The 60-member Centennial Singers have been a part of the Twin Cities music scene for more than 20 years. The group was formed to commemorate the Augsburg College Gospel Quartet tradition at the Minneapolis college. A dinner will precede the concert. There is a cost to attend. Otter Tail County Sheriff Department Chief Deputy Stacy Paulseth has been selected to receive the Henkes-Mortensen Law Officer of the Year Award.
A man escaped injury in a vehicle accident on Sunday on the west side of Parkers Prairie, near the intersection of Highway 235 and 555th Avenue, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by 22-year-old Arnold Thoenness III of Parkers Prairie, crossed over the roadway at 3:45 p.m., entered the south ditch of Highway 235 and then collided with road signs before coming into contact with a steep approach.
A 42-year-old Vergas woman whose name was not readily available at press time escaped injury early last Friday afternoon after an accident near the Paul Lake Public Access west of Perham. The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the woman had overcorrected. She was later investigated following no proof of insurance. Tom Hintgen, Otter Tail County Correspondent
Brian Stavanger from the Eide Bailly CPA firm attended the New York Mills School Board meeting on Sept. 23 to present 2013’s audit findings. Stavanger read through the audit report’s executive summary and stated that the school district had received “a clean and unmodified opinion… What we’re telling you is that the numbers that are in those financial statements we’ve verified and recalculated.
New York Mills High School students have selected their 2013 Homecoming royalty. Coronation will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in the high school auditorium. The Homecoming football game will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at home against Royalton.
Perham High School students will be jazzing it up for this year’s “Great Gatsby”-themed Homecoming celebrations. Everyone is welcome to attend all events (excluding the dance). At the coronation, a food-drive offering is requested in place of admission. T-shirts will be available for $15 at all of the week’s sporting competitions.
