Coats for Kids is now accepting donations. New or gently used children’s coats and boots in sizes birth to adult extra-large may be dropped off at Calvary Lutheran Church, Bremer Bank or United Community Bank in Perham. Items will be distributed on Oct. 10 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Calvary. For more information or to volunteer, call 346-7102.
With all donations now collected, the East Otter Tail Relay For Life organization has announced that a total of $88,316 was raised at this year’s relay in Perham, helping the region to exceed its previous year’s donations and come in above its goal. According to an email from Relay For Life’s Lisa Peterson, “We had until Aug. 30 to collect money for 2013, so we ended up with quite a bit more than we had in July, after our relay event.” All of the region’s seven relay events reportedly went well, exceeding the goal in almost every relay.
Minnesota 4-H youth members from 87 counties exhibited more than 2,800 non-livestock projects and 2,476 animal science projects at the 2013 Minnesota State Fair.

Festive polka music filled the air last weekend as the Ottertail Lions held its fourth annual Polka Daze celebration. From Sept. 5-7, hundreds of polka lovers made the trek to the wooden dance floor and yellow tent which were set up in the city park. “This year has been a fight with the weather,” said Jerry Smith, the secretary of the Ottertail Lions.
A family from Ottertail has taken second place in the 2013 Angler-Young Angler International Championship. David Groff and his kids, Tristan and Mailia, competed in Kenora, Ontario on Aug. 24, catching 36.82 pounds of walleyes — enough to win a Canada fishing trip. The AYA championship pairs two young anglers with an adult that they know, along with a professional Lund fishing guide, in a contest to catch the most weight in walleyes. The Groffs were guided by Norm Klopak. A total of 16 regional winning teams competed in the international championship.

Daniel Lee Conklin, 29, of Detroit Lakes, was sentenced in Otter Tail County District Court on Friday after a conviction of burglary in the second degree. He was an accomplice in a theft west of Richville in May. Conklin was committed to serve in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St.
A semi tractor and trailer hauling a load of sand in Otter Tail County last Tuesday morning left the roadway, entered a ditch, and rolled onto its side. The driver, Elaine Rakstad, 56, of Vining, escaped injury. According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred near the intersection of County Road 18 and 250th Street, northeast of Fergus Falls, just before noon. Rakstad was attempting to veer to the right, from pavement to gravel, when the vehicle went off the left side of the gravel and into the ditch, the sheriff’s office reported. Rakstad told authoritie
The 2013 growing season has been one of extremes for area farmers. It started with a long winter, turned into a soggy spring and then shifted into a dry summer, with a record-breaking week-long heat wave to top it all off. “Every year is different,” said Denise Kane, President of Guardian Crop Insurance in Perham. “We’ve just had a lot more different this year.” “We started out dry (in the winter),” said Kane. “Then, we got the moisture, but it would delay the planting even more.
