This Sunday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m., Northwoods Assembly in Perham will be hosting its 13th annual Hot Rod Sunday. The theme of this year’s event and message is centered on “Route 66.” Northwoods’ Pastor Dirk Currier serves as a chaplain at the Brainerd International Raceway and each year opens up his church to host traveling racers who are on the way to a National Hot Rod Association event. Hot Rod Sunday is a car show, featuring local cars as well as some show cars. This year, a purple Lamborghini will be on display. Awards are given for cars, and prizes are given away.
Northwoods Assembly and Teen Girls in Faith will be joining together this Saturday, Aug. 10 from 3-10 p.m. at the Pioneer Grounds in Perham along with other churches and community leaders to present The Extreme Tour. The Extreme Tour began as a grassroots project of “The Extreme,” a cultural outreach project started by Ted Bruun and a small group of other Idaho residents in 1994.
The city of Ottertail’s big summer festival will take place this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10. Events will kick off Friday night at 7 p.m. with a demolition derby at the track in downtown Ottertail, followed by live music by the band Confusion at the Hoot ‘N Holler. Things will continue on Saturday with a car show, parade, family games and much more throughout the day. Events will get started at 7:30 a.m.
Stuff the Bus school supply collection, on the front lawn of Perham High School on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The Lady Slipper Garden Club Flower and Horticulture Show will take place at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham on Saturday, Aug.10. The theme of this year’s show will be, “Designs From Magazines.” Entries will be received from 8:30-10:30 a.m., with judging from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Public viewing will be available from 1-3:30 p.m. Entry forms and further information is available at ITOW. Next Wednesday, Aug. 7, author and historian Terry Shannon will visit the History Museum of East Otter Tail County in Perham to share his experiences and artifacts about the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet on the Florida Treasure Coast, where he spends his winters. This spring, Laura Nyhus, Perham Health Speech Pathologist, became certified in providing VitalStim therapy, a treatment for patients suffering with difficulty swallowing or dysphagia. The therapy is a special form of neuromuscular electrical stimulation that helps habilitate and/or re-educate throat muscles needed for swallowing.
Seventy-five families from throughout Minnesota are being honored as a 2013 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota, including one from Otter Tail County, the Leaderbrands of rural New York Mills. The families will be recognized in ceremonies on Aug.
After a two month trial period, the Perham Food Shelf has decided to add new afternoon hours one week per month. The food shelf will now be open from 3-5 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, beginning Aug. 6. The morning hours, which run from 8:30-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday, will remain the same. The trial involved adding a Tuesday afternoon segment over the last eight weeks to see if there were families in need who could not make it to the food shelf during the morning hours.
