The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual Citizens Academy again this year. Sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., April 2 through May 21. The locations of the sessions will be announced at a later date. All sessions are free for citizens of Otter Tail County. The academy consists of eight sessions, each of them ranging from 2-1/2 to three hours long.
The contributions of French scientist, mathematician and cartographer, Joseph Nicollet, will come alive when an actor from the Minnesota Historical Society visits the Perham Area Public Library on Monday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. Born in France in 1786, Nicollet traveled to the area that would become known as Minnesota in 1836. He led three expeditions through areas including the Mississippi River, Lake Itasca, the St. Croix River and the Pipestone quarries. During his expeditions he created a remarkably accurate cartographical record of the region.
Get ready for the Second Annual Vergas Event Center Fundraiser, taking place Saturday, Feb. 22. The Vergas Event Center will be hosting an evening of socializing, food, spirits, live entertainment, and bidding wars over silent auction items. The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and opening bids on the “silent auction” items. The Vergas Lions will host a cash bar.

DALTON, Minn. – A semi driver struck a snowplow Tuesday morning on Otter Tail County Highway 82 near here, suffering a minor injury. As the snowplow driver was turning around just outside of Dalton at about 8:45 a.m., the semi driver was unable to see it because of poor visibility, according to an Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office report. The semi rear-ended the plow, smashing the windshield on the semi. Flying debris inside the semi gave its driver, Cody Johnson of Ashby, a minor cut on his head.
Authorities have released the names of two people who died early Friday in a fire south of Wadena. Daniel Suhl and Anne Carlson, both 21 and recently from Wadena, died when the camper trailer they were staying in caught fire and they were unable to escape, according to the Wadena County Sheriff’s Department. The fire was reported just before 4 a.m.
Due to continuous extreme cold weather this winter, the frost table is lower than previous years. This may result in frozen water service lines in some places. If you are concerned about your service line freezing, you can check your water temperature by running your water until it is cold, and then check the temperature. Water should be around 45 degrees.
The Jelloslave quartet will play at the Cultural Center in New York Mills on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Jelloslave, a Minneapolis-based quartet consisting of two cellos, drums and tablas, has an eclectic repertoire that takes audiences on a journey through time and genre, from Bach to Led Zeppelin and from folk music to jazz. Jelloslave originally formed in 2003 as a duo of cellists Jacqueline Ultan and Michelle Kinney.
The latest route recommendations for a proposed recreational trail between Perham and Pelican Rapids will be presented at two different Open House events next week. Representatives with the Otter Tail County Public Works Division will be hosting the events. In Perham, an Open House will be held at Perham City Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Monday, Feb. 10, an Open House will be held at Lake Region Electric Cooperative in Pelican Rapids. The meetings will include a formal presentation from 7:30-8 p.m.
