Joanie Galbrecht has been chosen as this year’s Provider of the Year by the East Otter Tail County Child Care Association. Galbrecht has owned and operated Joanie’s Daycare for 12 years. The daycare is located on 12 acres of land about two miles north of Perham on County Highway 51. Her family includes her husband, Ron, and their two daughters, Kristina and Megan. Galbrecht is active in the local childcare association and has held several offices within it.
Those wishing to honor and remember a loved one this spring with a memory block at the Perham Area Angel of Hope Memorial Park still have time to do so. The deadline for spring orders is next Wednesday, May 15. New memory blocks are added to the walls at park every spring and fall. The plan for this spring’s orders is to engrave the blocks the weekend prior to Memorial Day, weather permitting. If that is not possible, engravings will be done this summer. The Minnesota Safety Council has awarded a Governor’s Safety Award to Brunswick’s Lund and Crestliner boat manufacturing facility in New York Mills for superior performance in workplace safety and health. Brunswick is one of 227 employers to be recognized at the group’s Governor’s Safety Awards luncheon at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Thursday, May 16. “An effective safety program reduces injuries and costs, maximizes productivity and builds morale,” said Carol Bufton, president of the Minnesota Safety Council.
Perham Health and Living’s Relay for Life team will be sponsoring a silent auction next week to raise money for the fight against cancer. The auction will run Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. each day in the lobby of Perham Health, as well as at the Perham Living Town Center. The team will also hold a bake sale on Friday, from 8 a.m.-noon at Perham Health and from 12:30-3 p.m. at Perham Living. The public is invited to stop by either location during the week to support the team’s efforts.
Lake Region Review seeks quality fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry by writers in Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas, especially from those with a personal connection to the region. Submissions don’t necessarily need to be grounded in the region. The deadline is June 1 to be considered for inclusion in Lake Region Review 3, the third issue of the literary magazine published by the Lake Region Writers Network.
Conservatives and anti-tax advocates would have Minnesotans believe government is growing out of control. In reality, the opposite is true. Adjusting for inflation, budgeting gimmicks and state takeovers, per capita state general fund spending is 18 percent less that it was a decade ago.
I have my age-old fondness for where our English language comes from. In the process, I myself have become age-old. Our language is old, so the fact that I am older too seems to be a sort of comfort. It’s not, then, that I have become too old to cut the mustard. The only possible reaction of a healthy male, regardless of age, is denial.

A 16-foot section of dock has been stolen from a home near Perham. According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, the theft was reported by a resident of Devil’s Lake Road, northwest of Perham. As of press time, there were no suspects in the case. Tom Hintgen, Otter Tail County Correspondent
