APPLAUSE to the 120 firefighters and numerous other volunteers who worked outside all night in subzero temperatures to put out the largest fire the Perham area has seen in at least 50 years, and maybe ever. It was impressive and reassuring to see the amount of support the community had during the Jan. 21 firefight: a record number of 20 fire departments assisted at the scene, and dozens of other local individuals, groups and businesses pitched in to help in any way they could.

Hamann Family Dentistry of Perham will join with dental professionals across the state this Friday to provide free dental care to children from low-income families. The dental clinic is located at 200 First Avenue South in Perham. People interested in scheduling an appointment on Friday, Feb. 7 may call 346-4775. The Minnesota Dental Association is sponsoring this statewide outreach effort, called Give Kids a Smile. East Otter Tail County’s Relay for Life has been honored with the 2013 Community of Hope Award by the Northern Minnesota American Cancer Society’s Midwest Division. The award is presented annually to one Relay for Life community that “demonstrates the leadership, initiative and creativity to successfully implement mission-related activities that reduce the cancer burden and increase cancer awareness in their community,” according to a press release.
