Students had the chance to learn about other countries, cultures and beliefs at Perham High School’s 2nd annual World Cultures Day, held last Wednesday. According to World Cultures Day coordinator and high school social studies teacher Shelley Bunkowske, “the day was a total success!”
The Dent Community Club will be hosting its 3rd Annual Fiesta fundraiser this Saturday, Jan. 25. The public is invited to stop by the Dent Community Center from 5-8 p.m. for some cold drinks, tacos and raffle drawings. Club members and local businesses have been selling raffle tickets for prize drawings that will take place at the fiesta. Prizes are valued at nearly $4,000 and include a TV, guns, cash, a fish finder and more. Proceeds will go toward an air conditioner for the Dent Community Center.
The 6th annual Friends of Friends Fighting Hunger in Otter Tail County charity event is coming up this Saturday, Jan. 25. Featuring a dinner, dancing, and live and silent charity auctions, the event will benefit the Children’s Weekend Feeding Backpack Program, the county’s seven food shelves, and the Community Connect Mobile Food Drops for people in need in Otter Tail County. Held at Thumper Pond in Ottertail from 5:30 p.m.
The Great American Think-Off has released its philosophy question for 2014: “Love or fear: Which motivates us more?” The think-off is a civil public debate on timely issues, sponsored annually for the last 22 years by the Cultural Center in New York Mills. People of all ages are encouraged to take part in the debate. To be considered, submit a 750-word essay making your best argument about whether love or fear motivates us more. Sue Nelson, of rural Perham, has announced her intention to seek the Republican endorsement for Minnesota House District 8B. Republican Mary Franson of Alexandria is the District 8B incumbent. The price tag for the proposed recreational trail between Perham and Pelican Rapids is estimated at $11,117,000. The County Board of Commissioners is seeking a state matching grant in the amount of $5,558,500. A federal grant of $600,000 also is being sought. At a recent county board meeting, commissioners said they view the proposed trail, about 30 miles in length, as an enhancement to tourism and economic development in Otter Tail County.
