Gage Davis Barnes, 23, of Vergas, appeared in Otter Tail County District Court Jan. 3, charged with controlled substance possession in the fifth degree, a felony. Barnes was arrested in New York Mills on Jan. 1. He was a passenger in a car, and a traffic stop was made. The driver had no insurance and the registration on the car had expired. Six white pills were found on Barnes during a pat down search. A bottle containing blue pills was also found nearby; the pills were later identified as a generic version of Klonopin, a controlled substance.
On Dec. 31, the Otter Tail Sheriff’s Office reported a theft at the Rewind Center at 840 East Main Street in Perham. Taken was a 30-inch Husqvarna snow blower valued at $1,200. There were no suspects immediately after the theft was reported. Tom Hintgen Otter Tail County Correspondent
Thefts by check in Perham and Vergas in April of last year resulted in sentencing of a Fargo man on Dec. 30. Terry Samuel Ciancio, 32, was sentenced in Otter Tail County District Court to 18 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. Credit for time served is 241 days. According to court administration, technical wording for the felony charge was “issuing dishonorable checks.” Tom Hintgen Otter Tail County Correspondent

The East Otter Tail Soil and Water Conservation District has won the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Ecological and Water Resources Appreciation Award. The award was presented during the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual convention in December. The award honors a Soil and Water Conservation District that has implemented innovative conservation activities, demonstrated leadership and achieved significant results in the protection of Minnesota’s land and water resources.
A fire was reported at an Ottertail residence along Lynn Road on New Year’s Eve. Residents were able to escape without injury. According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, a resident was in his garage at 6:09 p.m., making repairs on a four-wheeler, when he started the engine and the unit caught fire. The fire spread to the garage and an area of an adjacent house. Responding to the fire call were fire departments from Ottertail and Henning.
Four fish houses were the target of recent burglaries on Rusch Lake, north of Dent. Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputies said padlocks on the doors of each fish house had been cut, allowing the thief or thieves to gain entry inside. The break-ins likely took place Dec. 27 and 28.
Bruce and Allison Breun, who earlier this year pled guilty to one of a total 26 charges they each faced related to horse abuse, have each been sentenced to 80 days of community service work. Ninety-day jail sentences were stayed on the condition that both the Breuns successfully meet conditions of the community service work hours. They also must provide financial restitution to Otter Tail County for court-related costs, and they are not to possess livestock or other animals for two years.
