Nicole and Trent Mursu of New York Mills are proud to announce the birth of their son, Beau Michael Mursu, born at 10:56 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2013. He weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and was 21 inches long. He was delivered by Dr. Bobbi Adams at Tri-County Health Care in Wadena.
Markus Doll and Chelsey Harper, of New York Mills, are happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Mia Kay Doll, born Feb. 12, 2013. She weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 3/4 inches long. She was delivered by Dr. Illene Reed at Perham.
A rural Underwood home burned to the ground last Wednesday evening. No one was injured in the fire, which may have started around the home's heating unit, but officials deemed the house a complete loss. According to a press release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a report of a house fire at 33567 255th Street at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 13.
Snowfall on Valentine's Day resulted in slick roadways throughout the area once again, resulting in many minor traffic accidents that day and the next. While most of the mishaps reported involved vehicles in ditches or other minor fender benders, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department said three more serious crashes took place along Interstate 94 near Fergus Falls on Feb. 14. One of those crashes involved a utility trailer carrying a 4-wheeler that flipped in the median. Another involved a rollover in the median, with two occupants.
A Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed Friday morning between Dent and Vergas. All train cars were upright and no injuries were reported, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department. Officials with Canadian Pacific said the tanker cars were empty, though they had recently been carrying hazardous materials. No nearby roadways needed to be closed as a result of the derailment. The incident occurred at 6:47 a.m. on Feb. 15.
A court hearing related to charges against the owners of neglected horses near Perham was postponed from Feb. 11 to March 4, due to adverse weather conditions on the previous date. Charges were previously filed against the owners of 11 horses taken from a farmstead north of Perham last November. Assistant County Attorney Heather Brandborg said the animals' owners, Bruce and Allison Breun, previously arraigned, are scheduled to appear in Otter Tail County Court on March 4 at 9 a.m.
A rural Parkers Prairie man heard what sounded like a crop-dusting plane with engine trouble about 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a loud crash. When Gayle Snook went out to investigate, he discovered the wreckage of a plane in some trees about 90 yards from his home. Otter Tail County sheriff's officials on Thursday identified the victim as 41-year-old Adam Menze of Ottertail.
Congratulations to Rhonda Bernu of New York Mills, who identified the 1967 homecoming king in last week's 'History Mystery' photo as Dennis Bernu. Queen was Rebecca Becker. Also pictured, according to Rhonda, were the 1966 king and queen, Joan Dumont and Elman Becker, with Patricia Bernu and Keven Majava. This matches with the information on the back of the photo. However, others gave different answers. all information submitted will be shared with the historical society. 'History Mystery' is a weekly feature of the Perham Focus.
FARGO - Local residents baffled at the unfamiliar loud sounds coming from their cellphones Monday morning can rest assured it wasn't their fault. Just after 9 a.m., many in the region received an unprompted "emergency alert" telling them a blizzard warning was in effect. "Prepare. Avoid Travel. Check media," the alert read. Although the alert cited the National Weather Service, meteorologist Vince Godon said the agency wasn't behind the messages.
Perham's Tyler Berby and Jack DeConcini, members of the Detroit Lakes Bantam A team will be playing in the Regional tournament in Anoka after DL won the District 15 championship 4-2 over Alexandria. The Lakers also defeated Fergus Falls 6-1. Detroit Lakes will be the District 15 No. 1 seed at Regions, while Alexandria also qualifies as No. 2.
