PERHAM -- A second meeting by the committee overseeing the removal and replacement of the grandstand at Krueger Field convened Friday, Feb.
Perham three-sport athlete Jesse Hein had a pick of regional colleges to attend this coming fall. The heavily lauded football, wrestling and baseball tri-captain chose Bemidji State University, where he will redshirt his freshman year before taking over duties as the team's starting center. "I thought about where would I want to go if I wasn't playing football," Hein said. "I love the campus and the coaches are awesome.
PARK RAPIDS-- Jayden Cullen nabbed the only event title for Perham finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle. His time of 5:16.48 broke a meet record that has stood for eight years and set a new Perham High School record, as well. "We had some big time drops and the boys are looking great," Perham Head Coach Sheri Ressler said. Cullen broke Thief River Falls' Chris Pribula's record of 5:19.77, which Pribula set Feb. 1, 1994. Three Yellowjackets swam section-qualifying times. Kevin Thompson and Leighton Covington qualified for Sections in the 200-freestyle.
PERHAM--Detroit Lakes and the #5-2A Perham Yellowjackets nearly played to a stalemate in a defensive battle Saturday evening. Perham survived a last second Laker shot holding on for a 36-34 victory. Both teams combined for only 25 points in the second half. "The score of the game doesn't indicate anything on how the game was played," Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap said. "Too many fans want all the scoring when the scoring couldn't be had due to the good defense played." Detroit Lakes led at the break by one point, 23-22.
PERHAM -- A back and forth basketball game came down to the final seconds and Perham's Lexy Karvonen put herself all alone under the basket and made a lay-up with two seconds remaining to give Perham its fourth victory in five games 61-59 over Detroit Lakes. The loss sends a reeling Laker team (11-9) to their sixth consecutive defeat after starting the season with a record of 11-3.
Rebuilding years can be difficult, as it has been in New York Mills, as the boys basketball team dropped games to Bertha-Hewitt and Henning to lower their record to 0-10 in the Park Region Conference and 1-16 overall. The road gets even more difficult next Thursday, Feb.
NEW YORK MILLS --The Eagles wrestling team (13-5) backed up their top 25 QRF ranking in Class A with a dominant 49-25 victory over a partial Wadena-Deer Creek team Thursday night. The Eagles head into the Park Region Conference tournament this Saturday at Long Prairie with a head of steam having only lost two duals all season. The following Thursday, Feb. 9, NY Mills will face Osakis in the first-ever Park Region Conference Dual Championship.
PERHAM -- Any talk of a sleeper team in the Heart O' Lakes Conference capable of upsetting either Perham or Pelican Rapids has centered on the strong play of Barnesville (4-4, 11-7).
PERHAM--The Yellowjackets girls basketball team won their third straight game and sent arch rival Pelican Rapids to only their fifth defeat of the season with a convincing Heart O' Lakes Conference victory, 65-52, Tuesday evening. Perham held Pelican Rapids to 13.5 points under their normal scoring average per game. "Defensively we were able to control an explosive offensive team and a big part of that was our ability to stay in front of their guards," Perham Head Coach John Gullingsrud said. Perham's numbers per game have been evening out as the season goes on from a distinct discrepancy b
This was the third of three straight champions led by the remarkable Janet Karvonen. Only the Edina boys had ever before won three straight state titles. See the full list at the MSHSL link of 100 years of BB provided. Upon reaching the page, click on the 100 years of BB tap.
