BEMIDJI, Minn. - A teacher at Voyageurs Expeditionary School in Bemidji has pleaded not guilty to having sex with one of his students. Paul Joseph Johnson, 48, of Backus, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. Johnson taught math at the school for five years. He was placed on unpaid leave after the charges were brought against him in January.
PERHAM — Mike Weismann went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead Moorhead to a 4-1 victory over Perham in the first game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader on Tuesday. The teams went to the seventh inning in the opener tied at one run each after scoring in the first inning. Zach Schroeder gave the Blues a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI base hit by Austin Skjefte. Josh Still led off the game for Perham with a single and tied the score on a one-out RBI single by CJ Mulcahy.
JORDAN — Becca Huus completed a strong finish at the Minnesota Class 2A state golf meet shooting a consistent 40 and 39 to finish in sole possession of 21st place overall with a two-day score of 165. She moved up nine places from her day one finish in a tie for 30th place and shaved seven strokes after a tough opening day front nine score of 49, followed by a back nine rally to card 37 (86). "Shots were great, I was making putts and didn't have to deal with the thick rough, at all," Huus said. "Anyone who plays golf knows you can always do better.
NEW YORK MILLS — The No. 4A Eagles have been making a strong push for the state championship baseball game the past three seasons and with a strong senior core are ready to make that last step to Target Field this week. Pitchers Brandon Kupfer and Tyler Patron and catcher Adam Patron make up one of the strongest batteries in the area as can be seen by their numbers.

MENAHGA — Strong starting pitching has been a key for the New York Mills baseball team and was again Friday as the Eagles clinched their fourth consecutive Minnesota Class A Section 6 baseball championship with a 4-1 victory over Frazee. New York Mills remains undefeated at 23-0. “Our whole focus is take it a game at a time,” Head Coach Chris Bushinger said. “The huge focus is getting to the state championship, but getting back to the state tournament is really where we wanted to get to.”
DETROIT LAKES — The Hawley Nuggets erased a three-run first inning deficit and scored 10 runs in the final three innings to complete a two-game sweep and claim the Minnesota Class 2A Section 8 championship defeating Perham 10-5 at Washington Park Friday. Hawley advanced to a second title game winning twice Thursday in Perham by a score of 7-6 in eight innings over the Yellowajckets and defeating Park Rapids 7-6 in the early game.
