The Perham girls basketball team won the championship of the girls' varsity Mercury division at the Fergus Falls Summer Showcase on Thursday, July 10. Perham defeated Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 38-23 in the championship game.
ALEXANDRIA — The Perham clay target team completed their season with an 11th place finish in Class AA at the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League’s 2014 championship, billed as the the world’s largest youth trap shooting event at the Alexandria Shooting Park in early June. Governor Mark Dayton was on hand for the opening ceremonies. Dayton and the Legislature approved more than $2 million in trap shooting sports facility cost-share grants.
PERHAM — The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton junior Legion baseball team overcame a seven-run deficit and completed a sweep of the Perham Stingers Wednesday at Krueger Field winning game one 9-8 and the nightcap 11-8. Perham blew open the opening game batting around in a seven-run second inning on RBI base hits by Dylan Perrine, Alec Meyer, Patrick Murphy and Brady Stoll. Murphy held D-G-F off the scoreboard for five innings.
PERHAM — The Perham Buzz and East Grand Forks split a doubleheader Monday in a pair of one-run affairs. Perham took the opener 5-4, while East Grand Forks answered with a 12-11 come-from-behind win in the last inning to earn the split. Buzz starter Jack Stigman controlled six innings allowing only two hits, while Perham’s offense staked out a 5-0 lead heading to the final inning of game one.
PERHAM — Grand Rapids swept four games to claim the third annual Highway 10 Classic baseball title defeating Fargo 21-5 in Sunday’s title game. Grand Rapids opened the tournament defeating the Perham Stingers 11-1.
PERHAM — Last year’s runner-up Casey Miller, of Baxter, returned to win the 11th annual Average Jo Triathlon in a time of 1:03.40. Miller finished the 0.3-mile swim in 8:02, the 12-mile bike ride in 30:24 and the four-mile run in 23.58. Fargo's Brandon Scheel placed second two minutes behind Miller in 1:05.41. Cheryl Rosentreter of Geneval, Ill., was the top female finishers placing 13th overall in a time of 1:17.09. She was the top female last year in a time of 1:13.08. Perham's Ben Olson was the top local male finisher placing 23rd in 1:23.00.
COLOGNE — The 2014 Highway 10 Classic baseball tournament will be played in New York Mills and Perham this weekend June 27-29. The tournament is more than baseball games; the goal of the tournament is eliminating youth suicide by providing suicide education, awareness and prevention grants to schools, and by using the tournament to provide that education in a fun venue. Last year’s tournament was taken by storm by Team Andy from Norwood Young America.
