MENAHGA --Thursday's Menahga Invite at Blueberry Pines Golf Club was won by Staples-Motley shooting a 296. Perham finished in second place with a 328. According to head coach Jeff Tweeton, Nick Forsberg and Mike Strain from Staples-Motley were the co-medalists, with very good scores of 70, especially considering the weather. Bagley finished third with a 341 in what Tweeton called not the strongest field in the world.
NEW YORK MILLS -- The Eagles softball team had their season opening six-game win streak snapped by conference foe Ottertail Central in NY Mills. The Bulldogs swept the Eagles 5-2 and 17-7. The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in game one when EmaLeigh Roberts singled and stole second and third base.
GRAND RAPIDS -- Kobe Weller, a New York Mills sixth-grader was not expecting a top finish at a recent NYWA wrestling tournament in Grand Rapids. He returned with a runner-up finish. "I was expecting to just have fun down there," Weller said. "It was hard but I still had fun." Weller won three of four matches to bring home runner-up accolades at the tournament. Wrestling is not something Weller takes lightly, especially, for a sixth grader. His secret early in his career is fitness. "I run three miles and I don't get too tired because I run that much," he said.
HAWLEY -- Pelican Rapids, led by medalist Mackenzie Strand's 40, captured the Heart O' Lakes Conference meet in Hawley by 19 strokes over Perham. Rachel Nelson was Perham's low scorer carding a 46, good for fourth place n the individual standings. Strand's 40 was four strokes better than Rylee Danielson of Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal and five better than Sammi Hammer, of Barnesville, in third place. Destiny Mitchell put up Perham's second lowest score with a 50; Becca Huus shot a 51; Shannon Karels scored 57 and Liz Sonnenberg rounded out Perham's runner-up total with a 58. Perham holds second p
PELICAN RAPIDS -- The Perham boys golf team carded four of the top five scores to run away with the Heart O' Lakes Conference meet at Birchwood Golf Course in Pelican Rapids Thursday. Casey Bruggeman, of Pelican Rapids, was the medalist on his home course shooting a two-under 32. The rest of the standings were all Yellowjackets in the top five. Dan Cavanagh placed second with a 34; Evan Arvig was a stroke back at 35 Thomas Huus and Nick Kalina both carded 36 to lead Perham to an 18-stroke victory over Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal 141 to 159.
PERHAM -- The Yellowjackets tennis team defeated Wadena-Deer Creek, while dropping matches to East Grand Forks and annual powerhouse Staples-Motley Thursday afternoon. "It was fun to watch our boys hit the ball so well," Head Coach Kyle Knutson said.
NEW YORK MILLS -- The New York Mills baseball team continues to mow through opponents. Thursday, the Eagles 10-runned Menahga 15-5 to improve to 7-0 on the season. The Menahga Braves, (1-7), small-balled their way to an early lead using successful bunt attempts and two seeing-eye singles to right field to build an early 3-0 advantage in the opening inning. Two Eagle errors made all three runs unearned. NY Mills answered in the bottom half with three earned runs.
DETROIT LAKES -- Perham golfers Rachel Nelson, a junior, and eighth-grader Becca Huus shot 86 and 88, respectively, to place third and fourth at the Pelican Rapids Invitational at Wildflower Tuesday, April 24. Perham finished in third place in the team standings with a cumulative score of 388. Staples-Motley won the event shooting 367. The host Vikings were runners-up two strokes back at 369. Emily Israelson, of Staples-Motley was the medalist of the tournament turning in a low card of 82.

BATTLE LAKE -- The New York Mills Eagles baseball team remained undefeated and continued their hot start with a sweep of Otter Tail Central (OTC) in Battle Lake Tuesday by scores of 6-1 and 7-2. Opening the season with six straight victories NY Mills is averaging 9.7 runs scored and only allowing 1.5 runs per game. "Through six games so far we've played pretty well," Head Coach Chris Bushinger said. "Our pitching has really stood out.
