STAPLES — Staples-Motley and Perham split a season-opening doubleheader in Mid-State Conference softball action Tuesday. Perham won the opener 9-7. The Cardinals earned the series split with an 11-0 victory in the nightcap. The opener was a back-and-forth affair. Staples got on the board early with an inside-the-park home run in the first inning, and tacked on three more runs in the second.

A Perham High School student is a top 10 finalist in the 2013 Chevy Scholarship Program. Judges selected Jillian Burns, a senior, from a pool of applicants. Area high school juniors and seniors nominated themselves or were nominated by someone else for the chance to win a $5,000 scholarship or one of nine other $500 awards.
DES MOINES, Iowa – All four North Dakota State wrestlers dropped matches in the first day of the NCAA Division I wrestling championships Thursday, sending them to wrestlebacks. No. 9 seed Trent Sprenkle dropped a 10-6 decision at 125 pounds to Virginia’s No. 8 Matthew Snyder. No. 12 seed Taylor Massa of Michigan upset No. 5 Steven Monk of NDSU at 165 pounds in a 7-5 decision. Sprenkle and Monk each went 1-1 on Thursday to advance to today.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Perham native Kelli Meehl, a member of the volleyball team at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls, has been recognized as an Academic Award Winner by the Minnesota College Athletic Conference for fall semester.
