It was a clean sweep for the Perham Cross Country teams when they captured their first wins of the season at the Detroit Lakes Invitational on Sept. 10 at the Detroit Lakes Athletic Complex.
The Yellowjackets cruised to their first team wins of the season edging out Nevis and Detroit Lakes.
The boys finished first with 23 points, while Nevis was second with 47 and Detroit Lakes was a distant third with 64 points.
The girls cruised to the team title with 20 points, while Detroit Lakes and Nevis battled it out for second. Detroit Lakes edged out Nevis by two points for the runner-up spot. Detroit Lakes finished with 59 points, while Nevis came in with 61.
The boys were led by Carson Hespe. He picked up his first individual win when he crossed the line in 17 minutes and 10.5 seconds. He was followed by Jakob McCleary. McCleary finished second for Perham at 17:42.7.

Micah Thompson put three Yellowjackets in the top five when he finished with a time of 18:04.5 for fifth place. Carter Flatau came in seventh at 18:41.6, while Bjorn Anderson was eighth at 18:50.4 and Caden Doll came in ninth at 18:53.4. Elijah Morris followed in 11th place at 19:09.8, followed by Gabe Thompson in 15th at 20:00.6. Domanik Hagen rounded out the field for the Perham boys with a 19th place finish at 20:25.3.

It was a nearly perfect performance for the Perham girls team. The Yellowjackets filled the top 10. Nevis’ Jade Rypkema ran away from the field with a first place finish. She set a blistering pace with a time of 19:03.1 for the win. She was followed by eight Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets claimed spots two-through-nine on their way to the team win.
Mya Morris was second at 20:59.8, followed by Kaia Starzl in third at 21:46.1 and Liz Birkeland in fourth at 21:48.9. Gracie Morris came in fifth at 21:55.2, while Quincy Anderson was sixth at 21:58.7. Lauryn Rustad finished seventh at 22:08.6, followed by Mia Lung at 22:15.7. Stella Strong was ninth at 22:30.8.

Olivia Rosenthal crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 23:54.4 for Perham.
The Yellowjackets are back in action when they compete at the Vintage in Staples on Sept. 18. The Yellowjackets will compete against West Central Area and Staples-Motley in a loaded three-team field of state-ranked teams.
