Perham-based Tuffy’s Pet Foods is expanding its production with a facility near the Twin Cities that will generate 150 new jobs.

Construction of the $60 million, 170,000-square-foot pet treat facility began this week in Delano, and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2020, according to a news release.

Charlie Nelson, president of Tuffy’s parent company KLN Family Brands, told the Twin Cities Business Magazine the company chose to build the new facility near the Twin Cities to gain access to much-needed workers.

“Currently, we as a community have more jobs than people,” he said. “Workforce is tight in our area.”

KLN employs about 500 workers in Perham. Like many employers in Perham, KLN has struggled to find help.

“We are limited with capabilities in Perham,” Nelson told the magazine. “We thought this was a good opportunity to really start fresh.”

In 2015, Tuffy’s expanded in Perham with a $70 million, 130,000-square-foot manufacturing facility.
