Lakes Country Landscaping and Irrigation is expanding its local client base, taking over lawn care services for Cutting Edge of Perham.
Effective April 1, the Perham-based Lakes Country Landscaping is providing all mowing, thatch removal, spring and fall clean-up, and fertilizing and spraying services previously offered by Cutting Edge.
Cutting Edge will continue as a spraying and fertilizing business, and will also continue to provide snowmobile and ATV parts, repairs and insurance estimates over the winter months.
Ed Delaney, who has owned and operated Cutting Edge since 1993, said the change is mainly due to the retirement of his longtime lawn care employee, Mark Walz, whom he said would be a tough person to try to replace.
“I’ll miss working with him,” Delaney said of Walz. “He’s the best employee a guy could have ever had.”

Delaney said he’d also miss being in the lawn care business, and will miss his regular lawn care customers, “some of whom I’ve helped for 20 years.”
Lakes Country Landscaping has been in business for more than 20 years. Landscaping and irrigation is at the company’s core, but it also started providing lawn services 12 years ago.
Mensing said that when the opportunity arose to take on Cutting Edge’s lawn care business, “we thought this would be a great opportunity not only for the new business and new customers,” but also for the existing customers of Cutting Edge, many of whom were already working with Lakes Country on landscaping, irrigation or snow removal.
“It just fits that we also now have the opportunity to service their lawn care needs,” said Mensing. In addition, “many of our new customers have already expressed that having one person to call for all their outdoor needs will make things simple.”
The lawn care accounts it’s taken over from Cutting Edge will be Lakes Country’s fourth acquisition since starting – and its second in two years. Last year, the company bought out L.A. Lawn Service of Detroit Lakes, allowing Lakes Country to grow in the Vergas, Frazee and Detroit Lakes area.
“We’ve been gradually getting bigger over the years, and we’ve been looking to expand in the Perham area,” Mensing said. “We are very excited to introduce the new customers of Lakes Country Landscaping to our lawn service. We feel that over the years we have developed a quality-driven lawn service that our customers can and do depend on.”
Mensing said he plans to hire more staff to cover the extra workload that this latest expansion will bring.
Cutting Edge will continue to serve any customers who solely use spraying and fertilizing services, and will continue to take on new customers in this capacity. It is only the lawn care portion of Cutting Edge that has been sold to Lakes Country.
