Pine Island Fish Co. will be closing at the end of the month.

"With heavy hearts," owners Jake and Kellie Smith announced on Facebook Jan. 5 that the Perham restaurant would be shutting down.

Pine Island Fish Co. opened on Main Street on Sept. 25, 2018, originally for extra kitchen space for the couple's catering company, Destination Dining, Kellie Smith said in the post. However, over time, the restaurant has taken a backseat while the catering business flourished.

Constantly having to shut down the restaurant and pulling the employees to cater was not really fair, Kellie said. The decision to close down the restaurant side of things is really the best business decision.

"We are not not leaving by any means," Smith told the Focus, "just getting a different look."

The Smiths appreciate the patronage and support that they have been given and have many things planned for their catering business. Thanks to their cook trailer, allowing them to cook on-site for catering, they will still be serving at pop events and will be setting up their food truck at town events such as Turtle Fest, she said.

Pine Island Fish Co. will be honoring until any outstanding gift cards that have been purchased until the restaurant closes at the end of January. Moving forward, gift cards may also be used with their catering services, Smith said.

Patrons are still invited to follow Pine Island Fish Co. on Facebook and on the restaurant's website, pineislandfishco.com, for updates.
