Perham’s downtown hardware store is getting a change in ownership as Murdock’s Ace Hardware has been sold to some familiar faces and is now Lakes Ace Hardware.

On Jan. 1, Nick and Katie Murdock sold Ace Hardware to Mark and Erika Sailer and Bill and Mallory Stoderl.

The idea to buy the downtown business came after Nick Murdock went to work for the city of Perham as the economic development director, Mallory Stoderl said.

Mark Sailer and Bill Stoderl worked at the store for about six years in high school and college when Nick Murdock’s parents Mark and Pat Murdock owned the store about 15 years ago, Mark Sailer said.

“We always loved the place, enjoyed the hardware business and the small hometown store,” BIll Stoderl said. “It just kind of dawned on us that we loved working here, they were our favorite jobs that we ever had. We should approach Nick and see if it’s something that would come to fruition.”

The discussions to buy the business started in November 2019, Mark Sailer said. There were not any roadblocks but it was a long road between getting everything ready financially for the sale and getting Ace Hardware corporate branding approval. “Overall it’s been treated like a passing of the torch or passing of the wrench, if you would.”

The purchase agreement was signed back in April, Erika Sailer said. She said she and Mallory Stoderl started working in the store to learn the business and get to know the customers in the summer.

While some new brands will be added, the store will remain the same under the new ownership, Mark Sailer said.

“We’re keeping all the same staff,” Erika Sailer said.

Bill Stoderl said they plan to keep the same service that long-term customers have come to expect from the Murdock family over the past 25 years. “It is a lot of the same customers that we were talking to 15 years ago, they remember us and we remember them,” he said.

Perham is a growing community with a strong downtown business center, Bill Stoderl said. In this new venture, the plan is to continue that same sentiment that the store has held under the ownership of both Mark and Pat Murdock and Nick and Katie Murdock.

The Murdocks moved the Coast to Coast Hardware store to the current location of the hardware store over 25 years ago, Mark Sailer said. The store became a True Value store before becoming an Ace Hardware under their ownership.
