Maplewood State Park will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the state parks and trails system with a picnic and other activities from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter. Bring a picnic lunch and participate in the various activities including a prairie restoration program, MinnAqua Fish and Water Program, a campfire cooking activity, old-time lawn games, and an outdoor music concert.
A picnic is about food and playtime with some simple activities the whole group can participate in. The park staff has a plan to help with the playtime and food by providing these activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ongoing.
Challenge someone to a round of tug-a-war. This tug-a-war is more a matter of balance than strength, so big or small doesn't always matter. And if the wind is up, see how high a homemade kite can reach. Find out how big a bubble can get after making a hand-held bubble loop. Dip it into the special bubble juice and let the breeze do the rest.
Participants may also put on a burlap sack to be the first across the finish line to win the potato sack race or play a game of lawn bowling known as Bocce.
A fun way to enjoy a campfire is to cook over it and this cooking "show" will feature foods made with a pie iron. If pie iron cooking is unfamiliar to you stop by our campfire to discover the ease of cooking a meal for one.
