Normally Perham’s summer Turtle Fest would block off about three streets to feature a variety of social events, music, turtle races, and the Turtle Fest parade

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Turtle Fest will not be like it has in years past. Turtle Fest 2.0 will be June 17-20.

“We’re going to do different things to create excitement but still be safe, social distance, and stay within the guidelines,” said Dan Schroeder, executive director of the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce.

“The whole thing behind Turtle Fest is a celebration of our community and of our visitors and locals alike,” Schroeder said. He said, after much discussion, decisions on how to safely conduct a version of Turtle Fest was decided upon.

“We’re not having the parade, or the turtle races, or the music,” Schroeder said. “But we’re going to be doing things like fireworks.”

Perham's annual Turtle Fest 2.0 will have a different look to it this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The medallion hunt, which is sponsored by Landmark Liquor and Pizza Ranch this year, will be taking place starting at noon June 17 and will keep going until the medallion is found, according to Schroeder. Clues for the whereabouts for the medallion will be announced daily at noon on Lakes 99.5 FM.

A new event, the race to find the turtle, will be put on by the Perham Events Committee, beginning June 17, Schroeder said. The event will take place every Wednesday as a turtle is hiding around Perham, he said. Clues about the turtle’s location will be announced on the PEC’s Facebook page and each week’s winner will get $500, according to Schroeder.

“Those are some of the things that we’re doing to try to bring some normalcy to this,” Schroeder said.
