It's been two years since the smell of fresh flapjacks topped with pure maple syrup permeated the Vergas Event Center — but the community of Vergas is once again gearing up to host its annual Maple Syrup Festival on Saturday, April 10.
"There will be both indoor and outdoor seating for the pancake breakfast, which runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Vergas Event Center," said festival organizer Sherri Hanson. "We will also have a drive through option this year, so you can come pick up your breakfast and take it home. There's all sorts of opportunities for getting your pancakes and maple syrup this year."
Due to ongoing pandemic restrictions, social distancing and mask-wearing are a must inside the Event Center this year, Hanson added, but otherwise the feed will go on much as it has in years past.
The Maple Medallion Hunt will get underway at 9 a.m., when the first clue is posted at the Vergas Event Center. Participants can come back for new clues once every hour until the medallion is found, Hanson said.
"There will also be a Maple Leaf Hunt for kids age 6 and under," she added. "Maple leaves" will be hidden at various points around the Tin Can Alley entrance to Vergas's new Long Lake Trail, with participants gathering at the trail entrance to begin the hunt at 10 a.m.
Also making a comeback this year is the Saps Running 5K Walk/Run, which gets underway at 9 a.m. as well. Same-day registration will take place from 8 to 8:30 a.m. at Billy's Corner Bar, though participants can also sign up by printing out the registration form from the Vergas city website, cityofvergas.com (click on the "Events" tab) and mailing it to VCC, PO Box 264 Vergas MN 56587. Checks should be made payable to the Vergas Community Club, which co-hosts the festival along with the Vergas Lions.
Participants in the 5K are also welcome to come back to Billy's at 10:30 a.m. for the awards ceremony, where medals will be presented to the first and second place male and female winners in the following age groups: ages 15 and under; 16-30; 31-40; 41-50; 51-60; 61 and up. Commemorative gear will also be given to all 5K participants, Hanson said.
Though there will be no sugar house tours this year, she added, local businesses will be opening their doors to the public, with most of them offering special festival items and discounts throughout the day.
"When you come to the breakfast there will be a brochure identifying some of those specials," Hanson added.
