Prepare for fair
The East Otter Tail County Fair Board has set the dates for this year’s exposition. Fair Secretary Don Weickert announced that the 1970 Easter Otter Tail County Fair will start on Thursday, July 23. The fair will follow its usual four-day run, closing on Sunday night, July 26. Weickert said that a contract has once again been signed with Jack Thompson Show to appear on the midway, and that the board is making good progress with other plans.
Army Specialist Five Duncan B. Grimm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred E. Grimm, all of Perham, received the Joint Service Commendation Medal on Jan. 12 in Kansas City, Mo. Grimm earned the awards for meritorious service while serving as officer redeployment clerk in the Redeployment Branch Office of the Adjutant General Headquarters U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam.
Snowmobile meet for all the money
The Premier American Snowmobile Association Races-- the ASA National Championship Races-- is to be held Saturday and Sunday in Detroit Lakes. Race officials are looking for 500 racers to enter the 32-mile cross-country race. The chief attraction for racers participating will be the $10,000 in cash prizes and $1,500 in trophies.

The top fourth-grade spellers at the Heart of the Lakes Elementary were named during last week’s Spelling Bee. In first place was Stacy Baumgart, second place Jimmy Polk, and tied for third place was Derrick Stolee and Brittany Lubitz. The other top 10 finishers are Megan Borrowing, Katie Burgau, Jenna Drake, Samatha River, Richie Babler and Brandy Kovarik.
The proposed expansion of the Perham Area Community Center (PACC) is an ambitious undertaking. But organizer Dennis Happel has another dream for the PACC that he would like to fulfill as part of the project, which is a water slide for the swimming pool. Water slides are a proven traffic generator and having one in the PACC’s pool would attract people from throughout the area.
Open house for two
A joint open house is being held Feb. 10 for the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and Head Start programs, who share the same space, in Perham. The public is invited to attend, meet staff and enjoy light refreshments. The open house will run from 1 to 3 p.m. The ECFE program has run for several years in the local school district, while Head Start was added this fall and has an enrollment of 28 children.
