Eastern Star members raise money for local food shelves
The local branch of the Order of the Eastern Star recently presented $600 donations to four area food shelves, including the Perham Area Community Food Shelf.
To raise the money, members of Olive Branch Chapter 114 volunteered to bus tables at Pizza Ranch in Perham one evening a month. They also participated in a Community Days promotion sponsored by Herberger’s Department Store.
Olive Branch Chapter 114 supports four food shelves in the area, including Perham, New York Mills, Mahnomen and Becker County.
Through their recent efforts, chapter members raised a total of $1,200. This was matched by Minnesota Masonic Charities, allowing the chapter to donate $600 to each of the four food shelves.
The Order of the Eastern Star has had a presence in Perham for more than 100 years, starting with Cleopatra Chapter 124. In 2003, that chapter consolidated with Olive Branch Chapter 114 out of Detroit Lakes.
The Order of the Eastern Star is dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. It is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men may belong.
Members of the Order are dedicated individuals who reflect the spirit of fraternal love and the desire to work together for good. The charitable nature of the Order is evidenced by the millions of dollars its chapters have raised to support cancer and heart research as well as scholarships for religious training, graduating high school seniors and continuing education.
