DETROIT LAKES -- The 2020 Lakes Area Photography Show is going on at Washington Square Mall in Detroit Lakes, and people are casting their votes for the best photos.
The top two most-voted-for photos will be named the winners of the People’s Choice Awards, earning mall gift certificates as prizes. The show continues through Sunday, March 8.
Throughout those 12 days, the 8-by-10-inch entries will remain up on display in the main corridor of the mall, where they are free for people to view and vote for.
There are about 100 entries in this year’s show, according to the mall’s general manager, Dawn Olson. That’s down a bit from previous years, she said, but numbers tend to fluctuate from year to year.
All the entries are from local area photographers, from communities including Perham, Detroit Lakes, Dent, Menahga and others. They were all submitted by adults; there were no youth entries this year.
That’s a little unusual, Olson said, but there’s still a wide variety of photo subjects to see and admire.
“There’s everything from wildlife to landscapes to people to pets,” she said. “And there are some new people who have provided entries this year, so it’s always fun to see that.”
This is the seventh year of the show, which was launched in 2013 by Detroit Lakes photographers Lee Kensinger and Jim Sinclair. A local photography club, the Detroit Lakes Photography Group, grew out of that first show and is still going strong.
A small, informal awards ceremony will be held at the mall upon the conclusion of the 2020 show.
