BRAINERD, Minn. -- A man is dead, a woman is in stable condition at a Twin Cities hospital and two men are in Crow Wing County Jail after a Sunday night shooting in Brainerd.
Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston identified the victims Monday afternoon as Joseph Kroll, 31, Brainerd, who died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head; and Chelsey Crawford, 31, Brainerd, who is in stable condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where she underwent surgery. Crawford also was shot in the head, police said.
Kroll's body will be transferred to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner for a forensic autopsy.
Nathan David Becker, 26, and Tyler Allan Cronquist, 23, remain in custody awaiting formal charges while the matter is under review by the Crow Wing County Attorney's Office.
Brainerd police were called shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday to a report of a shooting at an apartment on the 800 block of Juniper Street in Brainerd. McQuiston said the shootings took place in the apartment, not outside.

The suspects fled the scene. Becker was taken into custody about 10 p.m., outside the SuperAmerica station on South Sixth Street in Brainerd. About 11 p.m., Cronquist turned himself in to police. Both were arrested without incident, police said.
McQuiston said a motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. Police believe the act was not random as the victims and suspects appeared to know one another. The exact events leading to the shootings are unclear and police continue to search for the weapon involved, which is believed to be a handgun.
When asked who shot who and who called 911, McQuiston said he could not say at this time and said police continue to investigate the fatal incident. When asked if there was anyone else in the residence, McQuiston said, "Not sure."
McQuiston said police do not anticipate that there will be any more arrests in the shootings.
Becker was convicted of felony fourth-degree drug sale on Nov. 5, 2013, and sentenced to 15 months in prison. He was convicted with third-degree drug sale of a narcotic in 2010, and given a stayed sentence with 20 years of probation.
Becker also was convicted of four traffic violations in 2006, which included careless driving, seat belt and driving while intoxicated. He also was convicted of misdemeanor fleeing a peace officer in 2008 and in 2011. He served 90 days both times.
Becker also was on Crow Wing County's Most Wanted list in February 2013 for his third-degree drug sale conviction.
Cronquist was convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault-intentional to inflict bodily harm on Jan. 3, 2014. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail. He also was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated in a motor vehicle on March 12, 2013. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years of probation.
