Fire breaks out at Shearer's Snacks

A fire call to the Perham Fire Station at 12:28 p.m. Monday sent units to the nearby Shearer's Snacks plant where firemen discovered a fire in one of the cooking stacks.

Perham Fire Chief Mark Schmidt said the a fire will occur from time to time. He recalled attending about three such fires in his time with the department.

"Basically it is a grease fire," Schmidt said as his units cleared the scene shortly after 1 p.m.

The plant's 250 employees were evacuated from the building according to H.R. Manager Suzanne Berube. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Employees returned to the building after fire department units had cleared the scene.

Shearer's is located next to the Burlington North-Santa Fe rail line near the junction of County Road 34 and West Main Street.
