Perham will be host to the first Bike and Hike MS on May 18 at the Pioneer Village. Each participant can choose between a three-mile walk or a 10-mile bike ride. There's no minimum donation required to participate, but any donation over $10 will go towards a drawing for a new bike, courtesy of DL Bike Shop. When the ride is over, a free will donation meal of steak and potatoes will be provided by Lakes Area Cooperative Locker Plant.
All funds will go directly to the National MS Society to fund MS research and support.
Event Organizer Stephen Sweere was diagnosed with MS three years ago. After participating in events around the state, he realized there wasn't a great event for people around the Perham area. Sweere says this event will be different than others, because it's based around people that have MS.
Sweere said the event is great for people recently diagnosed with MS to network and have their questions answered. "You'll be able to meet cool people who know what symptoms are," said Sweere, adding that since it's the first year of the event, he's not sure what to expect.
"Things like this catch on in Perham, all of a sudden it can have 200 people," he said.
