Lake association formed to address high water issues on Spitzer Lake
Patrick Waletzko, Otter Tail County emergency management director, attended an organizational meeting that included about 25 residents of Spitzer Lake. That's where flooding is an issue south of Battle Lake.
One area affected by high water is a peninsula at Spitzer Laker, which is home to the Inspiration Point Christian camp and retreat center.
Waletzko reported that discussion took place with Coalition of Lake Association (COLA) representatives regarding the process to form a lake association.
The group selected leadership and discussed bylaws.
"The primary purpose of the lake association would be to address high water," Waletzko said.
He provided an overview of emergency and non-emergency declarations.
"The high-water issue at Spitzer Lake is a non-emergency flooding situation, and the areas affected are not eligible for disaster aid through the state or federal government," Waletzko said.
Discussions later took place with county commissioners about the high water issue. The few numbers of people impacted on certain portions of the lake make funding of a project very difficult.
