FERGUS FALLS -- Otter Tail County commissioners, on Jan. 7, voted to convene the County Board of Appeal and Equalization at 9 a.m. Monday, June 15, at the county Government Services Center in Fergus Falls.
The county board will reconvene the County Board of Equalization for final action on Tuesday, June 30.
Each spring the county Assessor’s Office mails valuation notices to all property owners informing them of the value and classification of properties within Otter Tail County.
All property owners have the right to appeal if they feel estimated market values and/or property classifications are incorrect.
Ditch maintenance plans approved
On Jan. 7 a motion by County Commissioner Doug Huebsch of Perham and seconded by Commissioner John Lindquist of Dalton was unanimously carried to authorize ditch maintenance on Ditch 13 in Eastern Township, near Parkers Prairie, and Ditch 19 in Parkers Prairie Township. Costs are not to exceed $30,000.
Repairs and cleanout of county ditches are an ongoing process, coordinated by county employees in coordination with the five-person Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners.
All county drainage ditches were built from 1900 to 1923. Otter Tail County had 70 systems that were petitioned in the early 1900s to be built by the local property owners.
Once the benefited property owners are determined, all costs incurred by the ditch system (for repairs, maintenance and inspections) are assessed back to the benefited property owners.
County ditches are regulated by the County Ditch Authority which is comprised of the County Board of Commissioners.
