Vergas man ID'd as pilot killed in Hawley Airport crash
HAWLEY — The pilot who died after crashing a small plane has been identified by authorities as Bradley Gibb, 69, of Vergas.
Gibb reportedly crashed an ultralight aircraft at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Hawley Airport and died on scene, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office. He was the only occupant of the plane when it went down.
When emergency crews arrived on scene they found a bystander with minor injuries who pulled the pilot from the burning aircraft, Sheriff Mark Empting said. The bystander who pulled the pilot out was treated for their injuries and released.
The Hawley Fire Department responded to the crash and put out the resulting fire.
The crash remains under investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
